A fire raged in downtown Pennington Gap, Virginia this afternoon.

The fire started in an upstairs apartment in the old Lee County Bank and Trust building around 12:30 this afternoon. The building is located at the corner of East Morgan and South Johnson streets.

Firefighters say they were able to get the fire under control by 2 p.m., but not before extensive fire, smoke and water damage hit the apartments.

There are a total of five apartments in the building, four of which were inhabited at the time of the fire. Tonight, four families are displaced because of the fire.

Downstairs in the building, a beauty salon suffered water damage.

Fire officials say the building is heavily damaged, but salvageable. An investigation continues this evening to discover the cause of the fire.
