ETSU Football Supporters Taking Campaign On The Road

The group trying to bring football back to East Tennessee State University is a relentless bunch. Despite recent failed attempts to revive Buccaneer football, supporters continue to push for community support. Saturday they’re taking their campaign on the road.

Since ETSU doesn’t have a football homecoming to celebrate, the Buccaneer Football Friends Foundation is heading to Tusculum College Saturday to watch the Pioneers take on Catawba. Although they’ll be cheering on Tusculum, ETSU supporters will really have their team in their hearts and on their shirts. They will sport blue and gold to send a message to anyone watching.

“The idea is just to continue the effort of gathering support in the community to one day have ETSU football come back,” Buccaneer Football Friends Foundation Member Matt Wilhjelm said. “Is this going to be the one event that everyone comes and that’s going to be the tipping point to bring back ETSU football? Boy, I hope so. Whether it is or not, I don’t know.”

Tusculum’s game kicks-off at 2:00 pm. The Buccaneer Football Friends Foundation will tailgate leading up to the game.

Just last week, an ETSU Athletics’ Department spokesperson said the university was still open to bringing football back. However, he also said there is just no funding available right now to restart the program.

To the almighty supporters,
Just in case you have been living in a cave, the STUDENTS of E.T.S.U. voted overwhelmingly NOT to support a renewal of the football program. WHY you ask! The main reason is WE, not you, will shoulder the financial burden of the program. By the way, if you thought that the program would be self-sustaining, think again. The fees the university charges the students, NOT YOU, were going to pay for the program. In addition, the fees were to increase for years to come for your precious football program. The students of the university spoke, NO football program. If you want the program so much, then some things need to happen. There should be no increase in athletic fees, the student population should NEVER bear any financial burden for the program, and finally YOU pay for the program. Take your checkbook over to the administration building and write a check to E.T.S.U. for the football program’s first-year operating budget. By the way, they will need a check for the marching band too. You cannot have a football program without a marching band. That should not cost too much since we already have some of the most gifted musicians in the area. If you want to support E.T.S.U. athletics, then start by going to athletic games already at E.T.S.U… It does not matter what sport. Just go out and support E.T.S.U. athletics. I would love to see the people of the community as driven about raising money for grants and scholarships as they are about the football program.
