Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department charged an Erwin couple with five counts of child neglect that Chief Mike Hensley described as one of the worst he had seen in 25 years of law enforcement.
Following up on a tip took deputies to 1210 West Park Street in Erwin. They found a mobile home infested by roaches and five children with heads shaved and covered by lice sores. They also found flies buzzing around a sink filled with dirty dishes.
The childrens’ mother, Angie Walker, faces five counts of child neglect. She is two months pregnant and had to be treated for lice infestation before being locked up in the Unicoi County Jail.
Her husband, Kevin, has been charged and is expected to turn himself in today. The children were turned over to their grandparents.

Five babies under the age of 6 years old and another on the way.
CAN YOU SAY “BABY FACTORY” AND “CHILD WELFARE CHECK” IN THE SAME SENTENCE.
If these people we raising dogs this way the humane society would have them jerked up and quartered for cruilty to animals and operating a “puppy mill”.
It’s a shame children aren’t given the same consideration as dogs and cat get.
Should not a red flag been waving in the face of some Doctor here?
To Dadw5boys….No, it’s not a crime to be poor. However, there is no excuse for being filthy or neglecting your children. As for the landlord, I don’t think he rented that trailer to them with all of those dirty dishes in the sink. If she didn’t work then she had all day to clean that house and take care of the children. Sounds to me like they were just really lazy, and that should be a crime.
If you have kids take care of them and put them in a safe and HEALTHY environment, if not dont have them!!!!!
for all u people that “know” this family…you should of knocked some sence in their heads!
my goodness, how we all judge others…. i would never think that child neglect and abuse is okay. i also know that there are usually many other factors that people who are only looking in on a situation, don’t know about. just a thought.
There is no judging going on here, it is simply mothers and fathers that are upset that someone could let their childrn live in this situation. I speak for myself and the others that we all obviously want the best for the children, and there is no excuse for the unclean house and the children in the condition they were in. If she care for her kids, she would have tried to get medical help for them, all she had to do was call or go to the health dpt. they would have been more happy to help her. I am also praying for the children, and the mother and father, that what ever help they may need they get.
I dont care what ANYONE has to say about this situation, there is NO reason for ANYONE to live like this!! Wheather they are poor or rich does not matter. The house dont have to be spottless but I darn sure would wake up and smell the coffee when flies were flying around my sink and my kids heads had sores on them. My kids are my first priority and that makes me disgusted on how this family lives. I am glad my mother and father raised me better than that!!!
There’s a big difference between being “poor” and being lazy and nasty. It’s a matter of pride, not a matter of money. In regards to “welfare” helping out. I have no doubt that this family was receiving every form of government assistance that is available. Otherwise, there would have been no incentive for them to keep having kids. Parents that actually work and support their own children usually limit the amount of children they bring into the world to the number that they can actually support properly. There are numerous types of birth control available to women today, which leaves no excuse for anyone to continue giving birth to children that they neither want nor have the ability to care for. If a woman is too lazy(or limited mentally)to remember to take pills or get shots, she should get a tubal ligation to prevent pregnancy. Five children under the age of 5 and one on the way!!! Unless you’re like Angelina Jolie and can afford the expense of caring for this many children, DON’T HAVE THEM!! And, regardless of how many children you may have, please get off your lazy butt and clean the house once in a while. A little soap and water goes a long way.
Welfare is provided for this family. Churches have provided for this family. I am well aware of the situation going on, and it’s a shame and makes me angry.
The grandparents are wonderful sweet and caring people who have been trying to help them for so long. When they are pushed out of the house and not even allowed to see the grandchildren, there is not much they could have done. Now they can finally step in and help those poor kids. It’s been a long time coming, and I am thankful that it has finally happened.
This family abused the welfare system, and the churches that have helped them. They just took and took and did not even care for the welfare of the kids. She said she had been “fixed” then ended up pregnant again and again, and yes someone did mention birth control to these people. They just did whatever they wanted and had no worry about that poor child who will be born into that family.
Grandparents have no rights when it comes to the children. Now hopefully they can help that family like they have tried to for so many years. I am so grateful this has happened, and thank God for the g’parents who will help care for those poor kids. Believe me, there is no pitty for the mother and father in this case. Now the kids can get the help they have long needed.
After our home burns wen I am 6 years old, We lived in a house with splits in the floor so wide you could see the bugs under the house.
When a little girl at school got live from the chickens her father raised everyone in school got the hair cut and heads washed with kerosene.
I guess we were really poor since the only meat we got was from hunting.
My dad worked 2 jobs and mom worked a job then did farm work on the week ends like hoeing corn.
Hard times but no one came around offering to report my my and dad for neglelct. No one cared it seemed but the Christians who use to laugh at our clothes on Sunday.
