UPDATE: Kevin Walker turned himself in to the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office. Kevin and Angie Walker appeared before a judge for arraignment in a Unicoi County Courtroom this morning. The judge set bond at $25,000 each and ordered the couple to have no contact with their children until he says it is alright for them to do so.

Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department charged an Erwin couple with five counts of child neglect that Chief Mike Hensley described as one of the worst he had seen in 25 years of law enforcement.
Following up on a tip took deputies to 1210 West Park Street in Erwin. They found a mobile home infested by roaches and five children with heads shaved and covered by lice sores. They also found flies buzzing around a sink filled with dirty dishes.
The childrens’ mother, Angie Walker, faces five counts of child neglect. She is two months pregnant and had to be treated for lice infestation before being locked up in the Unicoi County Jail.
Her husband, Kevin, has been charged and is expected to turn himself in today. The children were turned over to their grandparents.

OK…I am confused…she has a MySpace site (was there a computer in all of that mess?) with photos that were “not her”. Do ya think MAYBE it’s not HER MySpace site? People do have the same names ya know? Then there is the “McDonald’s manager” and all of the welfare/food stamps etc and talk about his not having a job and bla, bla bla. Maybe everyone on here just needs to say a prayer for these poor kids (AND the parents) and leave the rest to God and the police instead of speculation and saying whatever just to get a word in. God Bless the Grandparents- and all of you that have tried to help these people. I am sure the G-parents are breathing a sigh of relief to finally have some control regarding the care of these kids and to know the adults are getting what they deserve for allowing this to happen!....it’s sad to think that there are thousands more out just like these children…
Is it just me? or does this couple favor each other?? It just makes me sick to think what these precious children have been through..these people have no excuse whatsoever..there are too many resources of help available for them to live worse than animals..actually animals take better care of their offspring Im sure! I pray these children get a loving and clean home to live in! Our children are our most precious living thing on this temporary earth! they need to be societies priority to protect! It breaks my heart to see a child harmed in any way.

first and foremost, i am human and as such i do have compassion for the entire family. However, children and the elderly have a very soft spot in my heart. I am not a religious zealot, but I am very proud to say I serve a living God who stands for truth. All I have spoken is the truth. The adults in this situation were given the ok by Social Services (indirectly) to continue this way of life. No, I don’t point the finger at the adults here, rather the irresponsible acts of someone or some organzation allowed them to do what was done - no question about it. Had I been the service worker interviewed on TV, I would have covered my face in shame. I am not one that is going to allow you to abuse my child twice then confront you after three times. Does this make sense? Of course not. Having compassion also includes not sugar-coating the truth about what is right or wrong. If the word of God says, “A man that doesn’t work, should not eat” he meant it. Again, if the word of God says, “a man that does not provide for his family is worse than an infidel,“ think about that. At the same time, Social Services gave this family man every reason not to work to provide for his family.
Am I right or wrong? Who or what is really the problem here? And not just here, but all across the country.
Look people, we can point fingers and say this one should have done this or that all day but the pure simple truth here is several people let these kids down. The grandparents, uncles and aunts, doctors, neighbors, church members and yes Social Services. All of these people were in contact with this so called family so why didn’t someone along the way, for five years for Gods sake, speak up or do something to help these children. They did not ask to be brought into a world like that, by adults they were unfortunately born to. After the third child was born what recommendation, if any, did a doctor give these two sluggs about producing another child.
If there was ever a legal reason to justify castration this would be it. Those of you reading my comments that were in contact with these two “Baby Mill” parents needs a good swift kick in the seat of your pants for allowing this to happen.
With people like these two, you really have to watch them. I can’t believe that they didn’t even try to deal with the lice and roach situation. I know it’s not a shame to get them, but it IS a shame to keep them. And they had to know it was real bad on the kids if they shaved their heads. OMGosh! This just ills me to no end. Has anyone looked up her profile on myspace or facebook? even the picture on these sites are NOT her. I am upset that the social workers didn’t do anything about those children before now, but i am glad the grandparents have them and can and will take care of them. I am praying about this situation and I know that it will all work out according to God’s plan. We might not see it now, but we will in God’s time, not ours. It just bothers me that those children had to be in that situation for so long.
And Yea, If they are all 5 and under, at least the oldest should be in kindergarten or at least headstart.
Homeschoolmom…you seem to have a very good heart and I commend you for that. However, I don’t think it was actually all the “stuff” that was donated by churches that was the problem. I’m sure the church didn’t put all of those dirty dishes in the sink and the filth all over the place.
I wonder if it is more than stuff though that they need? I wonder if anyone has ever helped her go through all the stff and clean her house. Help her learn to organize it. Actually been the hands and feet of Christ, not just send her more stuff? I really feel these people need to experience all of what Jesus has to offer, not just the easy way out for us (just taking over stuff. I am working this out as I type.
homeschoolmom: you are to be commended for your effort. But sadly, these people have received clothes and toys and things from the church. They have ABUSED the system, and the kind hearts of others. Do not feel sorry for them, they are users and deserve nothing more. They are going to just take the things you donated and either sell them or keep them stored up like the other things they have received. They do get things from churches already, and just stockpile that stuff like it’s junk. She has more problems than a sorry good for nothing husband, or the lack of food or clothes. She’s got those things, and just took advantage of them. You really should just care for the children and their future. Which is what they failed to do.
doglady, knowing how SS as reacted in the past, I’m suprised they did anything after just three visits. It’s Parents, and I use the term loosely here, such as these two sorry excuses that makes for a strong argument for Pro-Choice people to use as an example to gain support for abortions.
