Elizabethton Man Killed In Single-Vehicle Accident
An Elizabethton man is dead this morning, after a single vehicle accident took his life Wednesday night.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says that Fred L. Shouse, 63, died in an accident at the intersection of 19E and State Line Road in Carter County.
THP tells us that a deputy with the Carter County Sheriff’s Office tried to pull over Shouse because he was driving his 1997 Honda erratically. They say that Shouse suddenly lost control of the car, causing it to flip three times as the deputy followed him. The accident ejected Shouse from the sun roof of his car.
THP says the wreck is still under investiagtion this morning.

Oh, how sad. but still why is the cop at fault here? Sounds to me like it was just an accident.I didn’t read anything about a ‘chase’ or whatever` Just a cop that saw something that may have been dangerous and went to pull the old man over and that’s that~ he lost control.
No reason to say it was the cops fault.
It always makes me mad when an article involving ANY police department. The police are always blamed.
I am the wife of a police officer. We have been married for over 10 years. Perhaps I am biasised…I can admit that. However I am also an ER nurse. The article stated Mr. Shouse was ejected from the vehicle. Most presumably not wearing a seat belt and observed driving erractically. What if the officer had not tried to stop him and he turned the corner. He could have hit someone else and killed them. What would the community say?
And least I offend anyone’s delicate nature. My deepest sympathies to his family. Value the time you have with those you love…you never know when it will be the last time you speak to them.
For those brave officers who walk the thin blue line everyday. Thank you and always be careful. Someone needs you to come home safely.
I think that respect should be shown for this family, regardless of the circumstances of the accident. They have lost their family member & I am sure they are in shock & saddened by his loss. Rules for posting comments, state “respect others” and “avoid offensive language”. Both of these rules have been broken & these comments should be removed. If you had lost a family member, would you want people making negative comments about your loved one? This would be great if people would use this to express sympathy or nothing at all.
How can you think that it is the cops fault?
grandmaw i know for a fact that you are incorrect. The thing that restrains officers so mch from doing anything is the great thing that we call the Constitution ( no sarcasim meant). We can only do so much then ours hands are tied. There is a lot of great officers in the Tri Cities that do a great job of putting on that uniform and going out to protect your rights and your safety everyday while at the same time they are not sure if they will get to go home to their kids and spouces. We do it for very little pay and sometimes we have to make a split second decision that can either be great or really bad. Anyone can set here and quarterback the Sunday game on Monday morning. It is not fair for you to place everybody in category. I can asure that there is not very many officers that are going to go out each day and say “I think I want to get somebody killed today”. FYI he was running for some reason and it is about time that people stand up and take responsibilty for the actions instead of always blaming the person that corrects them. BTW I dont work for CCSD.
evey time I needed one they were bought off by a drug dealer and arrested the victim. We were intimitated for two years by a druggie that lived across the street ( We bought a house not knowing this) shot at by a bb gun, bow and arrow, threatened to rape and kill, when we called BCPD they always said “ We have to see him do it” But yet he would call and say our vicious dog was outside or other petty things, they came right away and threatened to arrest us !So defend the innocent is not always in their “ motto” What about the news story with the wallent that was found ? They probably took the money and again arrested the wrong person and she now has to defend her self. I’m sure there is some good cops but most can be bought.
Oh my gosh….it’s always the cops fault isn’t it????
They sure are Lowsy till YOU need one…...
Maybe the guy should have stopped????
Sheriff was probably chasing or intimidating him. This will be hushed up I am sure.
