An Elizabethton man is in jail today after Johnson City Police say they stopped him during a traffic stop and he tried to run.
Derek Wayne Brown, 19, of Arrow Street, Elizabethton was arrested in front of the Fox Motel, Market Street in Johnson City.
During the traffic stop, police say Brown fled on foot from the officers after he had been placed in custody for possession of schedule VI.
He has been charged with escape, two counts of identity theft, evading arrest and simple possession of a schedule VI drug.
He is being held in the Washington County Detention Center on a $25,000 bond and will appear in court later this week.

I feel bad for him.
He’s been through alot, but with all hes done he needs to sit in jail.
I really wish he would straighten up because he could do better than that.
His parents dont do anything for him, and that’s why I think he acts the way he does.
I CAN TELL YOU WHY THEY RUN, ITS SIMPLE THE COURTS WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO THEM AND THEIR PARENTS WON’T EITHER. SO RUN STUPID RUN.
Remember in the movie, someone was always telling Forrest to run, and he did. Running is a reaction to a uncomfortable or undesirable situation. This could be in the top ten excuses for the defense in court- “yes your Honor my client ran, but only because he was being chased”.
People run because they might get away. It makes sense really. If you get away, its freedom for a little bit longer. Few people in our society feel they should be held accountable for their own actions. So, they run in hopes of obtaining a little more time.
Why is it when people get pulled over they hand over their ID and then decide to make a run. Would it not make sense to make a run for it BEFORE handing over your ID? At least then it would take them longer to find the person. No matter what one did or has on them, running will definately make matters worse.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. Simple possession would not have been that big a deal. Now he has really stepped in it.
What gets into people to make them run? It always just makes it much worse. Can anybody offer any insight into why one runs in cases like this?
And then, since he is charged with identity theft, apparently tried to lie about who he is. Or had he already used someone’s identity and the charges were found after his initial arrest and that was the reason he ran?
Some of these articles just leave more questions…
