A diabetes alert sticker offered by Mountain States and Wellmont health systems, tell police officers if you’re a diabetic patient.

The stickers are placed on the back driver’s side window of the vehicle.

In order to get the sticker, you must fill out the proper forms at your doctor’s office that say you’re diabetic and carry them with you in your vehicle.

Health officials say the stickers are helpful because a lot of times, diabetic drivers display many of the same symptoms as drivers who are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“We found that police officers occassionally will be pulling someone over or see someone on the side of the road that may be exhibiting these things thinking that there is something else like alcohol or like drug behavior,” said Jim Perkins, the system director of Wellmont’s Diabetes Treatment Centers.

You can get a diabetes alert sticker at the Mountain States Resource Center in the Johnson City Mall, or at the Wellmont Diabetes Treatment Centers in Bristol and Kingsport.

To find out more, call either of the 1-800-230-NURSE or 1-800-888-5551.

Please do not think that it’s dangerous for diabetics to drive. It is not for the majority of us who try hard to take care of ourselves. I’m diabetic and I drive safely every day. With proper care and eating well, most diabetics rarely, if ever, have problems. However, problems do happen. Diabetics can go high or low, sometimes with no advance warning. If I feel I’m not safe to be driving, I’ll pull over. I’d like to think that an officer who might see me wouldn’t automatically think I was drunk or drugged and haul me to jail. This program will help.

I’m confused, this sticker is to tell the police that don’t worry, I’m not drunk, I just drive like I am, because of a medical condition?  If its ok for someone with diabetes to drive and perhaps have symptoms of their disease while driving, shouldn’t it be ok if I drink and drive occasionaly.  Or should no-one be allowed to drink and drive and no-one drive with diabetes?  just food for thought.
