Death Of Jef Roberts Due To Head Trauma According To Report

BRISTOL, Tenn. – Local musician Jef Roberts died March 1 as a direct result of a street fight a week earlier, his autopsy report reveals, but a grand jury last month refused to charge the man who struck the final blow, Duc Thach.

The report plays up Roberts’ .274 alcohol level as having played a big part in bringing the 329-pound man to the sidewalk fronting downtown restaurant Machiavelli’s on Feb. 23. Poor motor control and a decreased level of consciousness were just a part of what alcohol brought to the picture, East Tennessee State University forensic pathologist Teresa A. Campbell wrote in her May 1 report, obtained by the Bristol Herald Courier on Monday.

Campbell suggested that the 40-year-old Roberts would never have toppled backward and smacked his head on the sidewalk if not for Thach’s punch to the face. The report also states that Roberts’ use of the blood thinner Coumadin, brain swelling and excessive fluid in his brain contributed to his death a week after the bar punch.

“Since the above discussed sequence of events were precipitated by a blow to the head received in an altercation, the manner of death is homicide,” Campbell wrote.

Homicide is defined as the act of one person killing another and is not always considered illegal, according to USLaw.com.

U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Duc Thach, 33, of Fort Campbell, Ky., could not reached for comment Monday night.

An official finding on the punch was no shocker for Roberts’ friend and State Line Bar and Grille bartender Marcus Adkins, 32, who was at the Machiavelli’s wedding reception.

“I thought it was evident that night that the punch caused it,” he said. “It’s really not a surprise to me.”

A Sullivan County grand jury ruled against charging Thach on May 27, Bristol Tennessee Police Capt. Charlie Thomas told the Herald Courier .

When pressed Monday for the autopsy report, Thomas handed it over and suggested the results not be publicized because it would hurt Roberts’ family.

“We did everything in the investigation that we could do,” he said. “The facts are what they are, and those facts were presented to the grand jury.”

District Attorney H. Greeley Wells would not discuss the case when contacted at home Monday night, saying he would be more open today when at the office with the case file.

Roberts’ death sparked a frenzy of rage against Thach, the police and the media. Comments jammed the Herald Courier’s Web site since publication of Roberts’ death first appeared.

Readers questioned the police for not arresting Thach. Tempers roiled over publication of Roberts’ criminal history with alcohol. And Thach was dubbed a coward for punching Roberts and leaving the scene.

At the time, Thomas, the police captain, blasted reader suggestions of a police coverup to protect Thach simply because of his military status.  “It’s good for us,” he said of Thach’s station at Fort Campbell, Ky. “We know where he is.”

From the outset, police said Roberts was the aggressor, and that Thach struck in self-defense.

Both Thach and Roberts were leaving a wedding party at Machiavelli’s Italian Restaurant on Fifth Street when the altercation began. Roberts reportedly cursed at Thach’s wife, shoved the husband and, after some heated words, drew his fist as if to throw a punch, police said, adding that’s when Thach struck the single blow.

Roberts lost consciousness after the fall, the autopsy states, had his heart resuscitated by paramedics and died about a week later at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

“No obvious cause of death other than the head trauma with its attendant complications can be found,” Dr. Campbell wrote in the autopsy report.

Still, the results do not comfort Adkins, Roberts’ friend.

“Sometimes, people are held accountable and sometimes they’re not. That’s our system,” he said. “My friend is gone and there’s nothing they can do to bring him back.”

I’m not on either side of this debate because there seems to be blame to go around on both sides - and I mostly agree with the grand jurys decision not to pursue further. The civil realm is where this belongs if the family chooses to go that route.

But I will say that the BHC has really turned into a joke of a newspaper. J. Todd Foster is leading the charge by defending his papers handling of this story, along with many others, that take great liberties to put forward the views of the “Editorial Board” rather than to just report the news. The spin that they put on the Jef Roberts story was shameful and could best be characterized as character assassination. They failed to report anything substantial on Duc Thach other than that he was a soldier and a veteran. No questions about why the guy left the scene and no deep probing questions about his past or issues as they did with Mr. Roberts. Did we really need to know that Mr. Roberts had a history of alcoholism in his past? If so, why wasn’t the alcohol use of the other guy brought into question, along with his past?

It’s clear that both parties had a role in this even and that both parties share the blame. But the media reporting was shameful and unfairly biased. If it was so important to the BHC to paint a picture like they did, they should have at least been objective and fair to all parties involved.

With BHC as a standard it’s little wonder why print media is dead and papers are closing up shop.

Brownnoser and veryprogun, you both seem very brave to dig into people whom at least had the guts to go by their real names.  Why not let us dig a little into your lives and see how squeeky clean you are?
Care to gamble?  If not then you can hide behind your fake names like cowards but at least we are out in the open.  That is really all I have to say about this!

The BHC is publishing a comprehensive editorial tomorrow on the Roberts case. We now are at liberty to report some things we’ve learned but couldn’t release until now. The editorial explains why. There will be plenty to hate for Roberts friends but also agreement with portions of the editorial. That’s the funny thing about the truth: It usually falls somewhere in the middle. the editorial will be posted around midnight tonight.

Seems Mr. Brown (nose)needs to watch a few CSI shows and I mean the REAL shows not the made up ones. Maybe he would have something better to do then blab his Nazi-type hate on here.
First everyone was calling for more blood over this and demeaning BHC and the police department…Mr. Browns kept most of that blood lust going and now continues to do so. If you actually worked in a funeral home than you know this: People who are buried are dead, families who bury them grieve. The dead do not come back…but the grief for the families continue especially when a—h—-s like you help it to go on. Go find another story somewhere else to inflame…nobody CARES what you have to say on here. We DO care that you, a person that has SUPPOSEDLY worked around grief and now SUPPOSEDLY works with counseling!! could continue to go here (as in don’t go there). You are only striving/begging for attention….which even MY post here is giving you the satisfaction of. BUT at least this is about YOU and not BHC and Bristol Police and this sad story which is all you are wanting anyway. Attention for YOU! I hope they DO shut this down so you will go away!

If any one here had read my earlier post(and I know AllenBrownnoser has. Thanks pal!) you would know that there are many facts in this story that were not printed in this newspaper. If you believe that the BHC is the only authority or source of information on what happened that night, you are using a frighteningly narrow world view. None of Jef’s friends or family believes the utterly ridiculous notion that anything will bring Jef back. In fact, that is the very reason people who cared for him want the truth and want justice for him. If it happened to someone you loved and you would let lies and half informed comments about them and not respond, then more power to you. I choose to pursue the truth and ask questions about my best friends death.

Good grief. What more can you people possibly have to say about this. The guy was drinking, he run his mouth, he got hit, he hit the ground, he died. Yes its awful. If it was my son or dad or whatever, it would hurt me terribly but give it a freaking rest. Enough is enough. He is dead and he is not coming back. Let him rest in peace. NOthing can or will be done to bring him back. Drop it already.

I have an idea. Stop doing hack journalism on this story. This is just as pathetic as Amy Hunter’s garbage. Who I notice did not write this version. Capt. Thomas is in need of assistance. He can’t determine if Jef’s head injury, which resulted in a week-long coma and eventually his death, was really the cause of death. Perhaps he had a preexisting coma? According to this article, when police arrived Jef was lying on his back with an injury to the back of his head and was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Does Capt. Thomas feel Jef was mysteriously struck in the back of his head by some as yet unknown assailant before falling backward AFTER being punched? It’s a true mystery. I think Capt. Thomas is in over his head on this one. Who exactly is “the hospital” who proclaimed this coma was not caused by an incident they didn’t even witness? What was their name or is that not important either. VERY professional. Also a mystery is exactly why this innocent knight in shining armor RAN from the scene when he supposedly did nothing wrong. Oh wait, that’s because he did do wrong and is a COWARD. This is the single most insane thing I have ever been asked to believe. A man is DEAD after being punched in the face and hitting his head on the concrete, and the frightened coward who did it and RAN is going on living as if nothing he did contributed in any way.
