Committee Wants Security Camera In Unicoi Co. Veterans Memorial Park

Erwin, Tenn.—The Unicoi County Veterans Memorial Park Committee will raise funds for at least one security camera.

Committee Treasurer Edgar Rice said he’s not sure how much a wireless camera will cost.  “I hope we can find one for about five grand,“ he said.

Rice wants the camera installed as soon as possible, to monitor the comings and goings at the park from the Unicoi County 911 Center.

Erwin Police Chief Reagan Tilson said a pair of teenagers, ages 16 and 17, burned flags and spray-painted a tank at the park.  The crime was committed on June 30th.

The vandals also knocked out a window in the Gentry Stadium Press Box, Tilson said.

Police found the burned remnants of those flags in trash cans across the street.

The Veterans committee estimated damage at $1,000.

Area veterans replaced the flags less than 24 hours later.

Erwin Police, Unicoi County Sheriff’s Department, and local veterans offered a $2,000 reward, but the money wasn’t necessary.

An anonymous tip led to the above arrests.  Both suspects pleaded guilty, and will be sentenced next month.
