Check Scam Making Its Way Through Region

Shane Casey recently got a call from his mother, who said that he had a letter, and a check that came in the mail. The letter stated he had won two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars in a prize give-a-way. The check was for four thousand eight hundred and fifty dollars, and the letter said it was to be used to pay non-resident taxes on the prize money. Sadly for Shane, the whole thing turned out to be a scam.

Shane did some checking on his own, and found out the foundation that the check was to supposed to be from was a fraud. The amount on the letter, and the amount on the check, were different from each other. Things just didn’t add up, so Shane took the letter to the police. He did the right thing.

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal says that scams like this one come along every few months, then die off for awhile, before coming back.

His advice, if you get a check like this…don’t cash it! The next thing to do is contact the authorities where you live, and have them check out the check.

Shane’s biggest concern, and the reason he came to 11Connects News with his story, is to get the word out about these check scams before someone, especially the elderly, get scammed out of their money.
