Breaking News: The House has reconvened after a recess and voted for Carter County Rep. Kent Williams (R) as the Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives.

The vote was in favor of Williams with 50 votes to Rep. Jason Mumpower’s 49 votes.

The race was close in the House, where Republicans have a one-seat majority. Kent Williams is the first Republican speaker of the Tennessee House in 40 years.

After the election of Williams, Rep. Mumpower requested that the Republicans be allowed a 30-minute recess before the voting took place for Speaker Pro Tempore.

In the Senate, Ron Ramsey was again elected Senate Speaker.

Selecting new speakers was among the first business as the legislature got started Tuesday with Republicans positioned to take
control of both chambers.

Ramsey, of Blountville, defeated Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis in a 19-14 vote along party lines.

The 106th Tennessee General Assembly convened at 1:00pm. Shortly after the session began, Democrats asked for a 30 minute recess.

News Channel 11’s George Jackson is at the State Capitol and told us things got a little heated shortly before the recess was requested.

Two East Tennessee Republicans are poised to take control of the House and Senate. Bunker, you don’t know what you’re talking about. Mr. Williams swore to vote for a Republican nominee, not Mumpower specifically. Mr. Williams was approached by the Dem’s and sold his soul to no one. He is a just and decent lawmaker who will not put up with partisan dogma from any party. The country needs more Kent Williamses.

Hey BUNKER!  Atleast have the courage to display your real name. You seem to be a coward to me.  If you can’t own it, don’t even say it.  You are so wrong, and out of line about Mr.Kent Williams. As for watching his back, how funny!  If you can threaten, why can’t you atleast back it up with your name on it?  Thank goodness we do have Kent Williams as our speaker.  He votes for what is right for “US”! I believe he will make much needed change for our state and communities. You may be the one who bit off more than you can chew, when you eat your words. Just sit back and enjoy!!!!!

Mr. Williams is not the slimeball or a disgrace to republicans of Carter County or the State.  Thank goodness we have a representative that will think outside the box and do what is best for the state and his county.  If both parties could get their heads out of their rears, they might be able to accomplish something TOGETHER.  Mr. Williams only wants the best for his region and his state.  I’m glad he doesn’t play party politics!

Mr. Ramsey wasn’t supposed to win by a landslide. He got the republican vote and the other guy got the democratic vote. That’s the way the senate is split.
I think he would make a heck of a governor one of these days.

Mumpower got what he deserved! For the past few months speaking in public about being the next Speaker and how he had all the votes(pledges signed & promised).  The one thing he seemed to forget was that there is an election to fill this position which had not been held yet. With all do respect, Mumpower and Ramsey come across as arrogant and smug the way they carry themselves at times. They need to remember they do not decide the outcome of an election, the people do! If they don’t belive me just ask the Republicans up in Washington who have recieved some hard lessons in the past two election cycles. Even so, I have to say I am getting fed up with both parties, Republicans and Democrats alike with the mess they have gotten this country and state into. I think both parties need to go!!! As far as the race for the next Governor, at the rate the General Assembly has spent / is spending money driving us deeper and deeper in debt Tennessee may be in the same boat California is finding itself now, bankrupt. Congratulations to both Mr. Ramsey and Mr. Williams.

Kent Williams is a slimeball and a disgrace to Republicians in Carter COunty and the State for that matter. I am not mad that he didn’t vote for Jason M.(JM) because frankly Ia m not a JM fan, I think he is too high strung. I am mad and dissapointed that Williams made a promise to his fellow party members, swore an oath (which I think was childish but they all do it) and then lied and went against that oath. If a man will lie, cheat, and bribe his own party members what will he do to us. Williams sold his soul today to the dems. and I will do anything I can to see that he is not re-elected in two years.

Ramsey on the other hand is very deserving of his position. Yes it will be very hard for ANY person in Northeast TN to get elected Gov.; however, I know he would be a good one. I think P.B. our curent Gov. has done a great job and I feel Ramsey, if elected, would also do a great job.

Kent…. watch you back you asked for trouble and I believe you will regret your choice of being the stooge pupet for the dems. You really showed you power hungry interself today. If you break down POLITICS you get the following- POLI= many—TICS= blood sucking insects. Tody Williams was the biggest blood sucker of them all!

Go figure. Guess with all of the talk of “expecting”, people forgot the position was actually voted on.
