BRISTOL, Tenn. – An Abingdon woman was arrested Tuesday after police accused her of raping her live-in girlfriend’s young daughter at least 11 times in three years. The couple lived together with the middle-school-aged child in a Bristol, Tenn., trailer park from 2003 to 2007.
Gwendolyn D. Hagerman, 42, of Norfolk Street in Abingdon, was indicted by a Tennessee grand jury Tuesday, then arrested at her home about 6:30 p.m. She is charged with 10 counts of rape of a child and one count of statutory rape, the Bristol Tennessee Police Department said in a written statement.
Rape of a child, according to the Tennessee Code, is a Class A felony that requires the sexual penetration of a child between the ages of 3 and 13. Police said the assaults began when the girl was 11 years old. The statutory rape charge stems from an incident that occurred after the child’s 13th birthday.
Bristol Tennessee Police Capt. Charlie Thomas said the department began investigating the case in May 2008, when the state Department of Children’s Services became involved.
The girl and her mother had moved away from Bristol in 2007, he said. Some time later, Hagerman wrote the child a letter that was intercepted by her mother, who claims to have had no knowledge of the attacks. The letter did not specify a sexual relationship, but its romantic nature aroused suspicion. So the mother started asking questions, and discovered that Hagerman had “bragged” about incidents with her daughter to people in their Bristol, Tenn., neighborhood, Thomas said.
Officers tracked down those neighbors during their 18-month-long investigation.
The investigating detective, Justin Branson, said he found no criminal history for Hagerman. But, Thomas said, they’re looking for more victims to come forward.
“We want to know if this person did this to other kids,” Thomas said. “Sexual predators very rarely limit themselves to one victim.”
Hagerman rented her Abingdon trailer with another woman when she moved from Bristol about a month ago, according to her landlord and neighbor Russell Young. Young said it’s the second time he rented to Hagerman; she lived there for some time before moving to Bristol about 10 years ago.
The Abingdon Police Department assisted with Hagerman’s arrest. She is being held without bond at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail awaiting extradition to Tennessee. The Sullivan County District Attorney’s office said a court date has not yet been set.

I usually stay silent on all the rude, low class and ignorant comments made here but I can’t on this one.
First of all I don’t know the “accused” or the “victims”. I deplore the crime IF it was committed but that is the key. She’s still “accused”, not yet found guilty.
The same people who have gone straight from accused to the penalty they deserve will write that all the police are corrupt. So if the police accuse someone of a heinous crime are they suddenly perfect? Can’t have it both ways. I for one trust most policemen and would run to them for help if needed, but I also have met a few lazy, dishonest and incompetent ones. My point is let her go to trial THEN spout off.
I believe that she is innocent until proven guilty at trial. At that time, if she is found guilty then I believe the best punishment is prison because prison is far worse than death in my opinion. (you know, other prisoners will punish her over and over…)
But the bottom line is wait until trial, then spout your opinions.
As far as the comments about her appearance, lots of women wear their hair short…that means nothing. Let it go.
Come on, folks. This picture can’t be the one that matches the story, is it? The BHC could be in trouble if the dude in the picture decides to pursue it.
How hard would it be to find a picture of the WOMAN accused of this horrible crime??
Disgusting!
Its sad to that people are not giving the accused the benifit of the doubt you want to throw stones at her cause oh the news and the law enforcement are accusing her of it so you believe it just remember she is being accused not convicted yet.As far as the letter yes writting a sexual romantic letter to a minor is a crime but it just said it had romantic remarks i have wrote to my girl friends and guy friends saying i love you or i miss you or i need to see you etc etc who knows what this letter said…guess we will all find out in court thats even if a letter exsist whos to say she wasnt writting the letter to her ex they re so many what ifs now arent they
To Innocentchild: My heart and prayers go out to you also. Its a sad day when people will stick up for the psycho child molesters and give THEM the benefit of the doubt without even having the facts. The innocent victim will have to live with this the rest of their life. I truly believe in a just GOD and He will take care of Gwen. It may mean she gets hers in this life with other prisoners taking care of it, but it will happen. The people that make Gwen out to be the victim are sickening.
You’re probably right, truelife, half of that town is Gwens inbred relatives anyway.
To trulife,
you defended what you said about the info from the newspaper. However, it is distrubing you did not dispute that writting romantic letters to children was wrong.
No matter what anyone has to say they are alot of people who will be behind gwen friends and family.iI was not judging the so called victims by any means cause no one whould like to hear what I could comment there
To innocentchild,
My heart & prayers go out to you & your family.
