KINGSPORT, Tenn.-Sally Simpson owns the Gun Rack in Kingsport and remembers when Jacksonville Jaguar safety Gerald Sensabaugh, a Kingsport native, stopped in.
“He wasn’t big headed, he was down to earth and was willing to talk to you, talked about his car,“ Simpson said.
That car, a 2008 black Bentley is what made Officer Amanda Lunsford suspicious when she saw it driving in downtown Kingsport.
“Police officers I think are naturally inquisitive,” said Kingsport Deputy Chief David Quillen. He said Officer Lunsford simply did her job by running the tags on the Bentley.
“It could have been an older beat up vehicle in more affluent section of town, maybe they’re lost or turned around or maybe there up to something,“ said Quillin.
When Lunsford found Sensabaugh’s license was suspended for multiple violations and failure to satisfy a citation, she made the call to arrest the Dobyns-Bennett grad.
That’s even though the car was parked.
Inside the Crew Cut Barber Shop, located at 806 E. Center Street, is where Sensabaugh sat getting his hair cut before Lunsford came inside and told him he was going to be arrested for a suspended license. She did let him finish getting his hair cut before he was taken into custody.
Although he would not go on camera Sensabaugh spoke with News Channel 11’s Kelly Cales at his house in Kingsport and told her he had no idea he had a suspended license.
Guns were found in Sensabaugh’s possession during the arrest. Sensabaugh was not charged for having a Bersa 380, an International Arms AK-47, and a Glock 22 in his cars because he had a permit.
Sensabaugh says he uses the weapons to hunt with his grandfather in Rogersville.
The folks at the Gun Rack say they are not sure if any of the guns found in Sensabaugh’s car were purchased from them.
They do say the arrest doesn’t change their opinion of him. “He’s a real nice gentleman I enjoy doing business with him,“ said Gun Rack salesman Bill Helton.
According to Sensabaugh this is his third arrest by Kingsport police.

Dr.?? Hammond. You can ramble all you want and bash whites all you want. All this comes down to is a young man who committed and illegal act and was caught. Plain and simple. There is no argument to that..he was driving illegally…and that is what he was arrested for….and this is his third arrest. So he is no stranger to the process. Everything is not a black thing. It is about someone committing a crime and getting caught.
And yes, I think it is despicable that someone can live in government housing and drive a sweet ride..whether they are white black green or purple…pay your own way like the rest of us have to

Now Evaningstar & Sgtfrag, you guys are wrong on the statements you made about Dale Street, and Public Housing.

First I want to say to Evaningstar, it’s funny how you can say partial criticism to countrygirl about her job and car, but you just completely attack me for my viewpoint on this article of the officer vs. Gerald Sensabaugh, I really think my point is complete proven that White’s sticks together as usual her, and on other things, oh well.
Well to countrygirl, I hope you understood my comments there about the public housing matter vs. nice cars, etc., cause here in Kingsport, you’ll see tenants driving real nice rides, and even doing some illegal activity, and living on assistance such as SSI.- State Program {Food Stamps, Tenn Care}, and even shacking up and not legally married at that.
The public housing sees no problem with that, but they say in housing contract laws that it’s not allowed, and you will be evicted or barred from public housing.
I salute you countrygirl for at least doing the best you can, and if you continue, you’ll always make it, no matter what.
Like Evaningstar said, the assistance program is suppose to be for those that need help, but not for long term cases. But we understand how that works don’t we?
I’m disabled from a car wreck, I can’t work, had a heart attack afterwards, then to top it off, my wife make way under a year what is needed for the both of to live on, and the SSI dept. won’t approve me due to the lies the doctor told my lawyers from the wreck, and so I’m screwed, and I mean I can’t get NO ASSISTANCE. And they said my wife makes to much money for us to be approved.
Now, you at least talk about your ability here, and I am glad you at least can work, and Evaningstar cuts my head off, because he says I’m being playing the RACE CARD, when I’m not, cause Gerald makes MILLIONS, and the three of us together can’t touch that. But the fact of the matter is, I still say that Amanda did wrong, cause Dale street is right by Krispy Kreme, and when I go down by there, I see drug dealers and expensive cars driven by these blacks & whites all around the area, and they’re hanging there because that’s their selling points location. Now I don’t see Amanda doing her job by being there to arrest these people along Dale & Center streets, nor do I see any of the other officers either. AND not only that, but there’s a camera placed right about center of Dale Street, and the Central Command KPD can see everything that goes on there, and still nothing.
Kenneth & Linda Calvert along with Kingsport Housing were responsible for help getting these camera’s placed, because of the problem, and still the problem continues. The monies used was grants, and the city approved it.
In my neighborhood, I have whites doing drugs, having 5 & 6 brand new cars in their driveway, and drug houses operating by them, and we have no protection. They are on government assistance programs because of their whites girls that has babies, and I mean just what I said, and no one sees anything wrong with the picture. You wanna keep on disagreeing with me, FINE. But the fact of the matter is, the point I made is not and will not go away. And to SGTFRAG…. Shame on you. You seem like you would have better sense, rather than to disagree with the truth, but like I said, you’ll go along with each other, now want you now?
Do what ever you all want to do, but I bet when Gerald was playing ball last year, some of you was having a time betting on the game, while he was playing, huh? If I wasn’t telling the truth, then why are you feeling so differently about the truth concerning Amanda? White’s, Black’s, Asian, whatever, a BENTLEY seen driving around Dale isn’t unusual, because there is Center and Sevier and Sullivan streets, and they all connect.
But If you lived here and drive these streets everyday like some, you would know, and not go by some report that you read, and just excepts one-side viewpoints. The newspapers staff does a good job always printing half the story, because the police dept. doesn’t tell the whole story to began with. Just like the boy that was killed on Ft. Henry. The Times-News printed one thing concerning what was involved, but two days later, they had to correct themselves on what they previously stated. The had the story totally wrong to began with. They go by listening to the scanner reports,and they’re not even on the scene at the time of the happening.
Just like they was not on the scene when Gerald was supposedly arrested by Amanda, so you guys get your facts straight before you all attack my comments cause I wasn’t there, and neither was any of you, so take that chump change to the bank for deposit. Have a Good Day, if you can help it.

So, from your comment you say you work 40 hrs per week and get ssi? No wonder you can afford that Camaro. I work 40 hrs per week and have to pay all of my house payment and drive a not so nice car because no one helps me pay my rent. I am not knocking public assistance, as a single parent years ago I did receive it and was sooooo thankful for it. But, the complaint I have about it is that it is meant to be a temporary crutch, not a lifestyle. I received help for two years while I worked two part-time jobs and went to college. Upon graduation and getting a decent job I came off of it as it is intended. If you can afford a sweet ride then you should be able to afford to pay all your rent or house payment. Your living quarters should come before having a nice car. So, in all reality you have not done anything but help prove a point I don’t think you wanted to prove.
Dr Hammond B-2 you were talking about whites living in public housing and driving nice cars and that they were stealing taxpayers money. Unfortunely I live in public housing and I drive a Camaro and I will give you the understanding that I worked a 40hr a week job to pay for that car, and still work a 40hr a week job. I have neighbors that are black and neither one of them will work, so therefore the Government is paying their rent and then she stood outside awhile back and told me how much stamps they got then they pull up in a new car, so the white people are not the only ones stealing taxpayers money. As far as your comment about SSI benefits do you know why all the whites are getting SSI? No you dont you dont know their situation. Some of them maybe like me and not want the benefits and had to take them. I have nothing against black people in fact there is a lady that rides to work with me everyday that is black and I have several friends that are black, but the truth is some of them steal taxpayers money as well as the whites.

You just made our point in justification…she observed him “driving”...regardless of him parking and then getting a haircut…He had driven the car with a suspended license.
Stop throwing the race card…you know if it had been a white driver in a Bentley in the ‘projects’ the police would have followed the same procedure.
As for high end cars…I own and drive a 2007 BMW and would still think that if I was driving thru the same neighborhood (regardless of my color) the police would be suspicious and at least run my tags.

Thank you Bill & Eveningstar for your critical remarks towards my statements on this article, nut the fact is you both must not live here in Kingsport to know how things on the KPD force is done around town, and this officer isn’t one of the TOP officers on the job either.
The fact that 1, just because Gerald was seen in the area of public housing, shouldn’t suggest he’s a bad guy, and run the tags; 2, the fact remains to be proven as to rather or not Gerald even knew if his license was suspended or not, being he lives in Florida as well; 3, we have a lot of out-of-state license tags in our city, and mainly Virginia state tags, and I don’t see where KPD is always pulling them over for offenses; 4, NO, I don’t like calling out the RACE CARD, but since this is Upper East Tennessee, where BLACKS aren’t to awfully excepted to a great degree, I must say that every time a black person is arrested, the white community around here gets edgy because other blacks go to defend them. This area is one of the most in-partial to blacks, but prejudice area I’ve ever lived in in my life, and I’ve been in a lots of city and towns across the country.
The white kids at DB you spoke about in my article, well the fact remains clear that {SOME of the STUDENTS}, hang around some of the most drug invested areas of town, and before Riverview was torn down, that was the hang out spot for drugs. How do you or anybody explain the fact that white teenagers are always getting by, BUT it seems clear that the parents of these kids do not care enough to stop their kids from doing wrong, and taking the keys from their kids.
Gerald I still say isn’t perfect, but however, neither is the white community of Kingsport perfect, not Bristol or Johnson City.
Stop defended your white community, just because there is a black athlete that has been pulled over. Turn the picture around and think, what would you both have said if this was a white NFL player, and a BLACK officer pulled them over? You’d be fuming at the lips, saying that the department needs to get rid of that N…. officer. {And I know I’m right}.
Facts are facts. Stop blaming me for stating truth, based on my opinion. You state opinions everyday, and I’m sure you believe you’re right. So let’s be fair here, and let the judge tell the story, and see what he has to say for the final note.
As far as to both of you not liking my statements, I really don’t give a flip, cause there’s nothing you or nobody else can do about it, but talk trash, so find another person to talk about, cause this is an open forum, and the last time I recalled, you are able to say what you think, so take that to ECU and make a deposit.

What would Amanda do if Pres. Obama drove a Bentley in town, and no one knew he was here? What would be the headlines on tomorrow’s front page? White officer pulls over the President, and arrests him for driving a BENTLY or whatever, BUT BLACK in the Public Housing area. How many times have you been seen in the public housing area? And WHY? And lastly, all the people in Public Housing don’t drive fine cars, especially a $175.000.00 vehicle. BUT, the white’s do drive pretty nice cars here in our community of Public Housing, and they’re stealing tax payers money at that.
Look at the food stamps whites are receiving, and the SSI benefits, and all the assistance from the Gov’t., aren’t you just proud of yourself helping these suppose to be helpless people? Think!!!! Stop getting angry and THINK!!!!

Bead the story and you will act a little a little smarter. Here is what happened.
On Friday, Jacksonville Jaguars safety Gerald Sensabaugh Jr., a Kingsport native, was arrested for driving on a suspended license.
At about 1:41 p.m., Kingsport Police Officer Amanda Lunsford said she saw a black Bentley drive west on Center Street, turn onto Dale Street and circle the block.
Suspicious of a Bentley in the vicinity of Kingsport’s public housing, the officer said she ran the tag and found the car was registered to Sensabaugh. The Bentley pulled up outside Crew Cut Barber Shop, 806 E. Center St., and Sensabaugh went inside.
Lunsford then checked Sensabaugh’s driver license and discovered he’d been suspended for “multiple violations” and failure to satisfy a citation.
Yes, such an expensive car with out of state tags in a low income government assisted housing project is reason for suspicion. And yes, she did observe him driving the car, as he circled the block of the housing project. This isn’t harrassment..it is just a cop being a cop. It is their job to be suspicious. Get off the race thing..it has nothing to do with it. He was driving illegally…what’s the big deal, he got arrested for something completely legitimate…why is everyone coming to this guys defense claiming profiling and such. I am not black and if I was doing the same thing he was doing I would have been arrested too. And someone mentioned the nice cars the students drive at db. Well, those kids (I would hope) do not live in government housing and they do not have out of state tags.
This is totally senseless for the KPD officer - Amanda Lundsford to site and arrest Gearld Sensabaugh, for two things sticks out on this article that just doesn’t makes sense. One, the car was parked, and the driver was inside the business getting a haircut, and was not under the wheel of the car; And yes I understand they said Amanda noticed the car over in the Dale Street location, but so what. What would happen if I bought a Bentley, and I drive over to Dale or Maple streets? Clean up the drugs in thoses areas, and maybe they wouldn’t have to have a reason to always be looking for BLACK people breaking the law. But there’s just as many whites buying drugs, matter of fact the black population in Kingsport is only 4%, so that means it’s the white’s, etc. that has more buy power for drugs if anything at all.
Matter of fact look back at the homocide that happened on Ft. Henry Dr. A 19 year old White DB former student; a drug deal gone bad and money stolen, come on people. This is a color issue, sounds like to me. If not a color issue, then simply a police officer looking to show how she looks good, which doesn’t even add up. She just wants to harass people like FOOTBALL PLAYERS.
Two, just because the car is a Bentley, doesn’t and shouldn’t make a difference for the reason of running the tags.
I mean look at the white DB students that has brand new cars, and some even has Mercedes and BMW and Jaguars and Escalade, etc, and yet you don’t hear for these white kids being arrested, but when it’s a star {BLACK} football player, he can’t go without being unnoticed. Just because she is a officer of the law, doesn’t give her the right to abuse her authority as an officer.
KPD needs to look into this matter a lot more closely. Black. White, Asian, or whatever, this is wrong, wrong, wrong.
And if Gerald had never been speeding two years ago in a BMW, this probably wouldn’t even be happening. I don’t know Gerald, but he has a right to drive whatever type of car he wants. I know pastor’s that drives high dollar cars and trucks, and I don’t see the law messing with them, BUT look where they live too? Are they going to arrest him for the home he built too? And what about all these Eastman employees that has high dollar cars? If they’re going to arrest people for nice rides, then arrest them also. This is just totally stupid and wrong. There needs to be a Internal Investigation of this matter.
