That’s the essence of Spirits of the Season, an event that has become a dazzling tradition celebrating the holiday season in Northeast Tennessee.
Spirits of the Season, a true wine and food tasting event, will offer the very best in wines, champagnes, cordials, cognacs and scotches, as well as award winning contemporary fusion cuisine created by E. Scott Phillips, executive chef of the Carnegie Hotel in Johnson City. Phillips has been named one of the top chefs in Tennessee and has been featured in Southern Living.
Spirits of the Season, an event to benefit the American Cancer Society, is set to take place from 4 to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9, at the Carnegie Hotel. The event is sponsored by the Carnegie Hotel and One Stop Wines and Liquors. These businesses are underwriting all of the costs associated with the event, so all money raised goes directly to the American Cancer Society.
This year’s event promises to be even bigger and better with more “top shelf” spirits available and more wineries participating. Phillips will match his gourmet offerings to this outstanding selection of wines.
Ben Scharfstein, owner of One Stop Wines and Liquors, created this wonderful event in 2005. Scharfstein’s cancer returned last fall after an absence of nine years. He continues to advise and consult but has turned over day-to-day management of his business to his son, Phil, president, and Mel Bowman, general manager. They have a combined 45 years of experience at One Stop and are pleased to continue the unique partnership with the Carnegie Management Team.
“The Carnegie Hotel is thrilled to host Spirits of the Season for the third year,” said Cara Ledbetter, director of sales and marketing at the Carnegie Hotel. “It gives us the opportunity to invite the community to enjoy the holiday atmosphere at the Carnegie Hotel, join with our friends at One Stop Wines & Liquors to present the season’s finest selections, and most importantly help raise funding for cancer research. This will be the event of the season.”
The Carnegie’s Grand Soldiers Ballroom, Wilder Dining Hall and Roosevelt Library will be transformed into tasting rooms for the event. The Gilded-Age elegance of the Carnegie Hotel will be made even grander with holiday decorations.
As many as 100 different beverages will be available for tasting. This is a great time to pick out gifts for friends, that special bottle of wine for your holiday meal or just find a new wine or two that you really enjoy. A visit to the Carnegie’s Wine Cave for decadent desserts and unique dessert wines will be the perfect ending to your evening.
More and more out of town visitors are coming each year, so be sure and get your tickets as soon as possible. Tickets for Spirits of the Season are $75 each and can be purchased at One Stop, 1912 S. Roan Street, the Carnegie Hotel, 1216 West State of Franklin Road, and the American Cancer Society office, 508 Princeton Road, Suite 102 in Johnson City. Cocktail attire is the preferred dress. For more information, call the American Cancer Society at (423) 975-0635 or One Stop Wines and Liquors at (423) 926-2448.
