Music, Sorghum Blend for Festival in Johnson City

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Spend a day in the past at the 2008 Bluegrass and Sorghum Festival at Tipton Haynes State Historic Site on Sept. 27 from 5-9 p.m.
During the daylight hours visitors can watch old-fashioned sorghum-making demonstrations using a mule and sorghum mill.
After dark, guides from the State of Franklin period will give candlelight tours of the historic mansion. Old-time and bluegrass music will be performed all day.
Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under with children 4 and younger free. The price of admission also includes a meal of soup beans and corn bread. Bring a chair and a friend and enjoy living history.

NE State Staging Comedy by Shaw
  BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. – Northeast State Theater kicks off a new season with a production of George Bernard Shaw’s comic play “You Never Can Tell” in the auditorium.
Set in an English seaside resort town in the 1890s, Shaw’s sophisticated comedy highlights the foibles of class snobbery, gender battles and the changing social mores of the time.
Performances are Sept. 11-13 at 7 p.m. with two matinees set for Sept. 13-14 at 2:30 p.m.
General admission tickets are $8 and $7 for seniors.

Garry Sheppard in Area Sept. 14
ABINGDON, Va.– Garry Sheppard will perform at Abingdon First Church of God, 500 White’s Mill Road., Abingdon, on Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
Sheppard sang tenor with the Kingsmen from Asheville, N.C.  for 10 years performing throughout the U.S. and Canada.
While with the Kingsmen, he recorded signature Kingsmen songs such as “He’s All I Need,” “The Judgment,”  “Meet Me At The Table,” “Stand Up” and “Wish You Were Here.” 
In October 2000, he was recognized with the Kingsmen by being inducted into the  Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame. 
He began his solo ministry in the fall of 2000 and now travels across the country singing primarily in churches.

Bluegrass Festival Sept. 13 at Park
  LIMESTONE, Tenn. – Mountain Melodies Bluegrass Festival will be held Sept. 13 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park, Shelter 3. Bring chairs or a blanket and listen to this free event.
There will be concessions available and the Crockett Cabin will be open with historical interpreters to answer questions.
Bands scheduled to play are:
—The Overmountain Singers, 11:10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
—Roan Mountain Moonshiners, 1:10-3 p.m.
—Mountain Tradition, 3:10-5 p.m.
—Tomahawk, 5:10-7 p.m.

Randy Travis Stars in ‘The Wager’
FALL BRANCH, Tenn. – What happens when the faith of a Hollywood star is put to the test? 
That’s the question haunting Michael Steele (Randy Travis) in “The Wager,” from Pure Flix Entertainment distributed by Outreach Cinema.

Show Features Hank Williams’ Music      
  MARION, Va. – The Lincoln Theatre presents “Hank & My Honky Tonk Heroes,” starring Jason Petty, on Sept. 20 at 7 p.m.
Petty has won critical acclaim all over the country for his performance as country legend Hank Williams in the off-Broadway hit “Lost Highway.” He racked up five nominations in New York’s award ceremonies for Best Actor. Now, this singer/actor/musician is bringing own tribute show to the region.
