Festival’s Second Week Keeps Winding Up with More Music
Time was when Monroe Jamison was a fixture in Abingdon’s bluegrass music scene.
Jamison, a full-time lawyer and when-possible bluegrass picker, for years worked the bluegrass aspects of the Virginia Highlands Festival. But then he died in July 2007 at age 52. So the VHF’s weekend of bluegrass and old-time music, scheduled for Aug. 8-9, was named in Jamison’s honor.

Poison Front Man to Make Bristol Appearance
Star of VH1’s “Rock of Love with Bret Michaels” and Poison front man Bret Michaels will appear at a State Street venue in Bristol, Tenn., on Aug. 9.

Aug. 2 Tribute Concert Set To Feature Vocalise Pieces
ABINGDON, Va. – An Aug. 2 concert will feature a unique vocal performance. As part of a tribute to French coloratura soprano Lily Pons, Dr. Sun-Joo Oh of the East Tennessee State University music department will sing several vocalise pieces.
Oh explains that vocalise are songs without words.

Travel 15 hours in a Buick on a weekday to play music in Cincinnati. That’s what Paleface and his drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot did on Tuesday.
“You just grin and bear it,” Paleface said by phone, five hours into their drive.
Then it’s on to Bristol on July 17 for this month’s installment of Border Bash. Newcomer Samantha Crain and the Midnight Shivers join Paleface on the impressive bill as two razor-edged acts that defy tidy categorization.
