ALCOA, Tenn. (AP) - Aluminum producer Alcoa Inc. says it will cut 450 jobs from its Tennessee operations as part of an overall reduction of 13,500 employees.
A spokesman for the Pittsburgh-based company said Tuesday that the company is cutting all smelting operations at the facility in Alcoa, about 13 miles south of Knoxville.
Spokesman Kevin Lowery said the company will still continue to operate its Rigid Packaging Division, which makes aluminum sheets for the beverage industry.
Alcoa said the 13 percent work force cut companywide is part of a broad-based plan to reduce costs that includes a global salary and hiring freeze.
Lowery said the plant employs more than 1,000 people.
