REGIONAL BRIEFS: Carroll County Collects Region IV Volleyball Win

HILLSVILLE, Va. — Kim Caudill supplied 22 kills and nine blocks as the Carroll County Cavaliers stopped Patrick County by a 25-9, 25-19, 21-25, 25-22 margin in the Region IV volleyball tournament quarterfinals on Tuesday night.
Leann Rippey (nine kills), Meleah Neely (15 assists, 16 service points) and Honesty Rogers (14 service points) also played well for well for the Cavaliers.
Patrick County defeated Marion in four games on Monday. Carroll County (23-0) will face Salem Thursday at a site to be determined. Salem defeated Bassett Tuesday.
The finals will be played Saturday.

Glenvar 3, Parry McCluer 0
In a Region C tournament first-round match in Salem, Jessica Owen (26 assists, four service aces, five digs) and Liz Trinchere (12 kills, 10 digs, six blocks) teamed to give Glenvar a 25-10, 25-12, 25-16 victory over Parry McCluer.
Glenvar (22-1) will play either Fort Chiswell or Hogoheegee District runner-up Northwood on Saturday in a regional semifinal match in Saltville.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Roanoke 3, Virginia Intermont 0

Virginia Intermont College closed out the regular season by being swept by Roanoke. Roanoke won by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-16.
Tori Starnes led VI with five kills and eight digs, while former Sullivan East High School standout Jessie Blevins finished with 21 digs.

MEN’S BASKETBALL
King 72, Allen University 44

Kyle Savely scored 18 points and continued his early-season success as King College earned a non-conference win in South Carolina.
Eddie Piccinini (12 points) and freshman Josh Padgett (10 points) also played well for King (3-0), while Ben Bosse hauled down 10 rebounds.

Tennessee 87, Indianapolis 73
In an exhibition game played Monday night in Knoxville, Tyler Smith and Scotty Hopson each had 14 points as the University of Tennessee rolled to a win.
Five different players scored in double figures for UT, seeing its first action of the 2008-09 season. Wayne Chism (12 points), Emmanuel Negedu (11 points) and Bobby Maze (10 points) also played well for the Volunteers.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Pikeville 81, Virginia Intermont 57

Despite 25 points and 14 rebounds from Nicole Collins, Virginia Intermont opened the season by losing a non-conference road game to Pikeville (Ky.) College.

Milligan 85, Lees-McRae 65
Rikki Baughman scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Milligan downed Lees-McRae in an exhibition game in Banner Elk, N.C.
