ESSSENTIAL GRADUATION INFORMATION
Commencement exercises were held at Castlewood High School at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 25, for 86 seniors.
Speeches were given by Valedictorian Travis Allen Carter and Salutatorian Dylan Ross Harding.
CLASS OF 2008 HONOR GRADUATES
-TRAVIS ALLEN CARTER (Valedictorian): Travis is the son of Roger and Jane Carter. His grandparents are Bill and Betty Carter and Bill and Pauline Hartsock. He has one brother, Drew Carter.
Travis has participated in five athletic programs during his high school career. He has been a member of the Varsity Basketball team for four years, the Varsity Golf team for four years, the Varsity Track team for four years, the Varsity Cross Country team for three years, and the Varsity Tennis team for one year. Travis has also competed in Junior Varsity Basketball, Golf, and Track, each for one year.
Travis has participated in several extracurricular activities. He has participated in the FBLA club for five years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer during his sophomore year and President during his junior and senior years. He has participated in the SADD club for five years, serving as Vice-President during his sophomore year. Travis has participated in the SCA for five years, serving as Secretary/Treasurer during his senior year. He also has participated in the Youth Alive club for three years and has been a member of the BETA club during his junior and senior years.
Travis has been recognized for his outstanding accomplishments in many subject areas. He has received medals for the highest GPA in thirteen classes. He has received perfect scores on the Physical Science, Geometry, and English 11 SOL tests. He has received the Woodmen of the World U.S. History Award, the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Castlewood High School Good Citizen Essay Award, and the A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School Certificate of Honor. In competition, Travis has received second place in Geometry and Calculus at the SVCC Math Competition. He has also received three first place honors and two second place honors in FBLA competition at the regional and state levels. Travis has also been recognized as an AIM Scholar for three years and as Who’s Who in FBLA at the state conference during his senior year.
Travis has been awarded many scholarships, including the Virginia Tech Pamplin Leadership Scholarship, the Southwest Virginia Community College Presidential Scholarship, and the Nilah D. Gray Business Award Scholarship. Travis plans to attend Virginia Tech with a major in Business Information Technology. He intends to pursue employment in management and aspires to start his own business.
-DYLAN ROSS HARDING (Salutatorian): Dylan is the son of Ben and Karen Harding. His grandparents are Bob and Betty Harding and Doris Hamilton. He has one brother, Kyle Harding, and one sister, Rachel Harding.
Dylan has participated in several athletic programs during his high school career. He has been a member of the Varsity Baseball team for four years, the Varsity Golf team for four years, and the Academic Team for four years.
Dylan has participated in several extracurricular activities. He has been Vice-President of the BETA Club and a member of the FBLA. He has also served as President of his senior class and was voted Most Likely to Succeed by his senior class.
Dylan has been recognized for his outstanding accomplishments in many subject areas. He has received recognition from the National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and as an AIM Scholar. Dylan has received thirty-five school academic awards in four years. He has also received the A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School Certificate of Honor for Western Civilization and the Woodmen of the World American History Award. Dylan has also earned perfect scores on the Physical Science, Geometry, and English 11 Reading SOL tests. He has been recognized as the three-time Advanced Physical Education and Weight Lifting Student of the Year. In competition, Dylan has received first, second, and fourth place honors in the FBLA competitions at the regional and state levels. He has received one first and two second place honors at the SVCC Math Competition. Dylan also received the Barter Theatre Young Playwrights Festival People’s Choice Award.
Dylan has been awarded many scholarships, including the Southwest Virginia Community College Presidential Scholarship, the Alcoa Scholarship, and a scholarship from the Russell County Foundation for Scholarships. Dylan plans to attend Virginia Tech with a major in Biochemistry. He intends to become a dentist and aspires to start his own practice.
-PATRICK WENDELL WILLIAMS FISHER, the son of Caroll Addington and Gary Fisher, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. He is the grandson of Glenda Williams and Marvin and Billy Fisher. He is the nephew of Aaron Williams and Arne Williams.
Patrick has participated in many athletic programs during his high school career. He has been a member of the Basketball team for four years, the Cross Country team for three years, and the Track team for one year.
Patrick has participated in several extracurricular activities. He has been a member of the SCA, serving as Vice-President for one year, the BETA Club, serving as President for one year, and has served as Vice-President of his class for two years.
Patrick has achieved several academic recognitions. He has been recognized as an AIM Scholar and has earned an Advanced Studies Diploma.
Patrick has been awarded an academic scholarship from the University of Virginia at Wise. He plans to attend UVA at Wise with a major in Athletic Training. He plans to pursue a career as a college athletic trainer and aspires to advance into a head training position.
- ALLYSHEA MICHELL MCREYNOLDS, the daughter of Norman A. and Mary McReynolds, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. Her grandparents are Bobby and Ethel Fields and Pegge and the late Norman E. McReynolds. She has one sister, Ashlee McReynolds.
Allyshea has participated in one athletic program during her high school career. She has been a member of the Academic Team for five years.
Allyshea has participated in two extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the BETA Club and the French Club.
Allyshea has achieved several academic recognitions. She has been recognized by the National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, the National Society of High School Scholars, and the United States Achievement Academy. Allyshea has also received academic medals in French III and Trigonometry. She also has received first place honors in Trigonometry at the SVCC Math Competition.
Allyshea has been awarded an academic scholarship from UVA at Wise. She plans to attend UVA at Wise with a major in Mathematics and Education. She intends to pursue a career as a math teacher.
- COURTNEY BRIANNE COMPTON, the daughter of Jeffrey and Stephanie Compton, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. Her grandparents are Joe and Lois Hulsey. She has one sister, Madison Compton, and a special family member, Doug Slone.
Courtney has participated in two athletic programs during her high school career. She has been a member of the Varsity Softball team for four years and the Varsity Basketball team for two years.
Courtney has participated in several extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the FBLA and BETA clubs and has served as Public Relations Officer in the Hi-Y Club. She has also completed various forms of community service, including volunteering for Relay for Life and Project A.S.K.
Courtney has achieved several academic recognitions. She has been recognized by the National Honor Roll and Who’s Who Among American High School Students. She has received academic medals in English 10 and 11, along with certificates in Chemistry II, Spanish III, Art I, and Journalism.
Courtney has been awarded many scholarships including the Tennessee Grocers Scholarship, AT&T and CWA Scholarship, the Russell County Rotary Scholarship, a scholarship from the Russell County Foundation for Scholarships, and an academic scholarship from UVA at Wise. She plans to attend UVA at Wise with a double major in Chemistry and English. She intends to pursue a career as a pharmacist.
- CHRISTOPHER MATTHEW SMITH, the son of Ronnie and Kathy Smith, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. His grandparents are James and Patsy Dixon. He has one brother, Justin Smith.
Chris has participated in many athletic programs during his high school career. He has been a member of the Basketball team for six years, the Baseball team for six years, the Golf team for six years, the Cross Country team for one year, and the Track team for one year.
Chris has participated in several extracurricular activities. He served as Vice-President of his senior class. He has also completed various forms of community service, including volunteering as a youth basketball instructor and in the Salvation Army.
Chris has achieved several academic recognitions. He has been recognized by the National Honor Society and Who’s Who Among American High School Students.
Chris has been awarded many scholarships including the Bristol Compressors Scholarship, the C.P. “Bud” and Elsa Williams Memorial SVCC Scholarship, the AIM Scholarship, and an academic scholarship to UVA at Wise. He plans to attend UVA at Wise with a major in Nursing. He intends to pursue a career in nursing.
- KRISTEN BROOKE GIBSON, the daughter of Jackie and Angie Gibson, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. Her grandparents are Jean and the late Albert Sargent and the late Dame and Brown Gibson.
Kristen has participated in several athletic programs during her high school career. She has been a member of the J.V. Basketball team for one year, the Varsity Football Cheerleading Squad for one year, and the Varsity Basketball Cheerleading Squad for three years, serving as captain for one year.
Kristen has participated in several extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the FBLA club for four years, the Ecology club for two years, the Youth Alive club for two years, the BETA club for two years, and the Spanish club for one year. She has also been a member of the SADD club for three years, serving as Secretary for one year, and the SCA for four years, serving as President her senior year. Kristen has also served as Vice-President of her eighth grade class and President of her junior class. She has been a member of the Yearbook Staff for two years.
Kristen has achieved several academic recognitions. She has been recognized as an AIM Scholar for three years. She has received the A. Linwood Holton Governor’s School Honor Award and was voted Most Likely to Succeed by her senior class. In competition, Kristen earned second place and fourth place honors in the FBLA competition at the regional and state levels.
Kristen has been awarded the Nilah D. Gray Business Award Scholarship. She plans to attend East Tennessee State University with a major in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing. She intends to pursue a career in pharmaceutical sales.
- ERIC SHANE HALE, the son of Michael and Janice Hale, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate.
Eric has participated in many athletic programs during his high school career. He has been a member of the Cross Country team for four years, the Track team for four years, and the Academic Team for two years.
Eric has participated in several extracurricular activities. He has been a member of the FBLA for three years, the SCA for three years, the BETA club for two years, and the Spanish club for four years, serving as Treasurer for one year and President for two years.
Eric has achieved several academic recognitions. He has been recognized as an AIM Scholar and has earned an Advanced Studies Diploma. He has received a medal in Spanish and certificates in Spanish and Geometry.
Eric has been awarded many scholarships including the Coca-Cola Enterprises Scholarship, the Tennessee Grocers Scholarship, the C.P. “Bud” and Elsa Williams Memorial SVCC Scholarship, the SVCC National Science Foundation Scholarship, , the AIM Scholarship, and a scholarship from the Russell County Foundation for Scholarships. He plans to attend Southwest Virginia Community College with a major in Engineering. He aspires to graduate from Virginia Tech with a Masters in Civil Engineering.
- KARIE MICHELLE CASTLE, the daughter of Tommy and Karen Castle, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. Her grandparents are Maxie Castle and Clarence and Shirley Hobbs. She has one brother, Jason Castle, and one niece, Jaydon Castle.
Karie has participated in several athletic programs during her high school career. She has been a member of the Eighth Grade Basketball, Junior Varsity Basketball, Varsity Track, and Academic teams.
Karie has participated in several extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the FBLA for four years, the yearbook staff for two years, and served as a Spanish Club officer for three years.
Karie has achieved several academic recognitions. She has been recognized by the National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and as an AIM Scholar. She has been recognized for academic excellence, earning a medal in Physical Education and certificates in Chemistry II, Physics, and Spanish I, II, and III.
Karie has been awarded the Alcoa Scholarship. She plans to attend East Tennessee State University with a major in Pharmacy. She intends to pursue a career as a pharmacist. Karie future aspirations include going to law school and becoming a lawyer or politician.
- ALISON DANIELA OSBORNE, the daughter of Brian and Michelle Tuggle, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. Her grandparents are Ruby and the late Roger Osborne, Marie and L.D. Blankenship, and Nancy Meade. She has one sister, Courtney Clifton and a special aunt, Susie Osborne.
Alison has participated in one athletic program during her high school career. She has been a member of the Varsity Football Cheerleading Squad for four years, serving as captain for two years and co-captain for two years.
Alison has participated in two extracurricular activities. She has been a member of the FBLA for four years and the BETA Club for two years.
Alison has achieved several academic recognitions. She has been recognized by the National Honor Roll, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, and as an AIM Scholar.
Alison has been awarded the AIM Scholarship and an academic scholarship from SVCC. She plans to attend Southwest Virginia Community College with a major in Radiology. She intends to pursue a career in the medical field.
- DYLAN THOMAS ALLEN, the son of Tom and Sherry Allen, is a Castlewood High School honor graduate. His grandparents are Walter E. “Buck” Hylton and the late Mary C. Hylton and the late Fred T., Sr. and Lottie “Dot” Allen. He has one brother, Derek Allen.
Dylan has participated in many athletic programs during his high school career. He has been a member of the Golf team for five years, the Basketball team for four years, and the Cross Country team for two years.
Dylan has participated in several extracurricular activities. He has been a member of the FBLA for five years and the BETA Club for two years. He has also completed various forms of community service, including volunteering for the Russell County Fair, canned food drives, Meals on Wheels, the Lake Bonaventure Country Club Grounds Improvement Project, Project A.S.K., and various cancer fundraisers.
Dylan has achieved several academic recognitions. He has been recognized by Who’s Who Among American High School Students and as an AIM Scholar. He has received recognition for excellence in Advanced Computer Information Systems, Spanish II, and IT Fundamentals. He has also received first place honors in the Knowledge Matters Competition and earned three first place honors and one second place honor in FBLA competition at the regional and state levels. Dylan also received the Barter Theatre Young Playwrights Festival People’s Choice Award.
Dylan has been awarded many scholarships, including the VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship and both an academic and an athletic scholarship from UVA at Wise. He plans to attend UVA at Wise with a major in Accounting. He intends to pursue a career in Accounting.
