NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee is serving as a model for a national organization seeking to redesign the way new teachers are educated.
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education accredits over 700 teacher education programs that prepare a majority of the nation’s teachers for work.
In a Tuesday news release, the group announced a major redesign the way it accredits programs that looks to a Tennessee Board of Regents pilot program for inspiration.
The program takes the emphasis off classroom learning in favor of on-the-job training. As a key component of the program, students spend their entire senior year in residency working as teachers.
