HOUSTON – (June 25, 2009) – Although most students enjoy a break after a long school year, some choose to take the opportunity to continue learning. Each summer, a select group of eager undergraduate students from across the country are chosen to participate in the Summer Medical and Research Training Program (SMART) at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

The nine-week employment/educational program for students interested in exploring a career in scientific research pairs undergraduate students with BCM mentors to conduct biomedical research in a broad range of areas.  Students also attend daily seminars that span the spectrum of biomedical research and GRE preparation workshops and participate in various career development activities.

Spencer Leong from the Bristol area will participate in the program this summer. Up to 100 students from across the nation are recruited for the program each year.
