Utility Trailer To Recall Workers To Smyth County Plant
Utility Trailer, which earlier this year laid off scores of workers in Smyth County and announced that its Glade Spring plant in Washington County would close, has had a change of fortune.
Plant Manager Jack Washburn said today that by mid-September the Smyth County plant will recall 145 employees.
“If openings still exist after we recall these people, those people who are still on layoff from Glade Spring … will be offered the opportunity to go to Marion to work,” Washburn said. “In addition, it appears that our Glade Spring dry van plant will also be calling 15 or so people back, about the middle of July.”
Washburn said not only has Utility begun to receive orders again from existing customers, it has received sizable orders from new customers as well. Back in March, he’d said the ability to recall workers would depend on the economy improving.
