Tri-Cities Pet Owners Having to Give up Animals

More and more pets are being dropped off at animal shelters across the Tri-Cities as the economy continues to falter. SOUND OFF: Should there be a penalty for pet owners who can’t care for their pets?

The Washington County-Johnson City Animal Control Center is seeing 15 to 20 animals coming in everyday.  That’s up at least 20 percent from last month.  Likewise, the Sullivan County Animal Shelter has seen an increase of ten percent since last month.  Pet owners are telling Tina Huffine, Shelter Attendant at the Johnson City center, that they just can’t afford to keep their pets anymore.  Huffine said pets are also being abandon and neglected by their owners because they can’t afford to feed them or pay for vet services.  To find out more, click play above.

Fry the pets to feed the kids ????
Drop the kids off ? Is this a joke ?
If so…. It wasn’t funny ! It was kind of offensive ( to me anyways )

if times are THAT tough, maybe fry up the pet and feed the kids. Of course I’m kidding. (maybe)  crazy times. leave the pet at the pound, drop the kid off in Minnesota or wherever.

I just get so tired of people saying “can’t” and “won’t”.  Life is hard - get a helmet!  I have compassion for people but I am a firm believer in the old saying “where there’s a will - there’s a way” ... your animal may not be your blood child - per se, but do they not have feelings?  My cats know when I’m sick or sad and they can tell when I’m happy…it also goes both ways.  Animals know pain, happiness, sadness and so much else—they have a brain, a heart, lungs, kidneys ..so what makes them so different from an actual child?  They cannot talk so therefore WE are their voice.  There are many ways to earn extra money if youre on a fixed income!  You can donate plasma for money, you can sell old jewelry you don’t wear, save change lying around the house—these are all things I’ve personally done when times get tough.  Most people are just too lazy and would rather take the easy way out.  So pardon my harshness but its just the truth…most people don’t like to hear it and get defensive over it but thats just life!  Stop being irresponsible, and making excuses…use that energy to make things happen!  As far as “fixed income” goes…My mother is on disability and my dad works a normal job..he’s nothing special.  They have 4 animals, a house, 2 cars, and they are taking care of my grandparents financially—BUT THEY STILL MAKE IT WORK.  My sister works a normal job and her husband is on disability—they too have 4 animals—THEY MAKE IT WORK.  You have to get your priorities straight, and do what needs to be done.  Get a 2nd job for heavens sakes….ask a neighbor for some animal food. Don’t let pride stand in your way.  All of the lame excuses are sickening.

Robin, I am sorry to hear about the death of your father and I hate to hear about your mother having to give up her dog.  Is this dog her only companion?  What type of dog is it?  Has she already given the dog up?

To Robin, I did not say that there was anything wrong with giving your animal to another person to care for, that is not what this article is all about, its about people taking them to the animal shelters and dropping them off there, by all means if you can’t for some reason take care of your pet then give it to someone who can. Like I said, if you are going to take them to the animal shelters then you might as well just keep them at home and let them die because most of them are going to die there anyway, how many animals do you think that they put down in a months time, take a look at your local animal shelter and you will find out. Like I also said, most people do not think of their animals as family but I DO, I too have 2 children but believe me I consider my dogs my children also and I think people who would do this to an animal just dont have any compassion for anyone.  There are always means of feeding your animals, believe me I know as I myself live on a fixed income and pay my bills just like the rest of the people and its a daily struggle but we make it and my dogs do not go without food and neither do we.

Well, I have 2 dog, 2 cats, and a goat. I am having some trouble keeping up with all the food they eat but it’s not putting in debt by any means. Yet because I’m not having to struggle to care for my pets doesn’t give me the right to put down others that are. I have read some comments on here that were very rude. Some people are really having serious problems with money right now and no animal can be compared to a child as some people have done. I have 2 children also and if times get worse and I have to choose between feeding my children and feeding my animals then I am obviously going to feed my children. My Mom is having to give up her dog which she loves very much but she is on a fixed income, my dad past away and she is living day by day just trying to make ends meet and keep herself fed and warm in this cold weather. So PLEASE don’t put people down for having to give up their pets. Some people just can’t make it right now on the money that’s coming in for them. I love my pets very much but if worse comes to worse, Yes I would rather give my pets over to someone that can better care for them instead of allowing them to suffer.

I agree with kdskeber, you wouldn’t take your child to a hospital and leave it so why in the world would you take your animal. I guess alot of people don’t consider their animals as part of their family but let me tell you that my husband and I sure do, we will go without to get food for our dogs if necessary.  I would never dream of taking my dogs to an animal shelter and dropping them off. Let me tell you people something, if you drop them off at a shelter then most of the time those animals are put to sleep because of no one adopting them, well why not just keep them at home with you until the end of their life from not feeding and caring for them because they are going to die anyway. Have you ever been to one of these animal shelters and watch the procedure of this action. Maybe some of you that think that it is okay to do this need to go and watch how inhuman this procedure really is. Come on people get with it, these animals don’t ask to be put on this earth and we are their only hope, please try everything in your means to keep these animals with you at home where they are used to being with you.  This is such a sad story, I just don’t understand how someone could be so cruel.

My animals are taken care of so don’t worry yourself. They come before a McDonalds burger!! Someone else did not want to take of them, so I am!  Next time they come through, I’ll make sure to take a picture for you or better yet why don’t you come and watch for them since you have nothing better to do. As far as politics, take it somewhere else.

I feel bad for people who have to give up their pets, I took in 2 strays when things weren’t so bad, now things are really bad and a couple times I have had to make dog food because I didn’t have the money to buy it.  How would you feel if you lost your job, or your vehicle, leaving you stranded and then on top of that having to lose your pet too, you make these people out to be irresponsible, well the ones just dumping yea they are, but the ones that take them to the shelters, they aren’t and they are hurting too.  In the past 6 months I have lost a husband, child had to be the sole supporter after being a stay at home mom for 18 years, yes I love my pets but if it came down to them or what I have left, gonna have to choose us.  So don’t be so hard on everybody they are being punished by having to give up their friend and companions.

Lets see pics of some of these “pet owners” who are abandoning their dependents.
I’ll bet the poor cat came in second to another bag of cheeseburgers from McDonald’s.

If you can’t take care of your pets don’t keep any.
And for that matter, stop panicing.
The financial woes we face will not last much longer now that we have a real American to take over the gov’t. It’s not like McCain won, so don’t worry.

Feed your pets. You know most of you can stand to miss three bites off a burger. Or should be able to.
