RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Timothy Kaine still has more than a year to serve as governor, but three Democrats are vying for a chance to replace him - and he’s staying out of it.
Kaine says he’s neutral in the three-way Democratic race between Del. Brian Moran of Alexandria, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County and former Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell is the lone Republican candidate so far.
Virginia governors cannot succeed themselves in office. Kaine’s term expires in January 2010, but the Democratic primary will be in June.
National attention will likely be focused on the gubernatorial race, to see if Democrats can extend their run of electoral successes in the state.

I think a number of them were for the change back then; but again, it was opposed mainly due to questions about a balance of powers rather than pure partisanship. As far as I can tell, Virginia is the ONLY state that does not allow governors to serve more than one term.
wonder where these democrats were when when gov.allen and gov. gilmore was in power?
I know for our legislators, this is a matter of balance between legislative and executive powers, but I agree, something should be worked out to allow more than one term. This issue has been resolved on the federal level and in many states. Surely, Virginia can do the same.
I think it is stupid that Virginia Governors can only serve one term in office. They should at least be able to serve two terms.
