A sinkhole has re-emerged on Highway 421 in Johnson County - after being covered over with asphalt.

11 Connects Digital Journalist Philip Murrell is on the scene investigating the sinkhole, after one resident called and stated she was afraid the sinkhole could engulf her home.

Currently, Highway 421 in Shady Valley near the crossroads is closed. The Tennessee Department of Transportation told us this morning a 10-foot wide, 16-feet deep hole appeared.

Right now, transportation crews are investigating the cause of the hole and they hope to have highway 421 reopen to traffic this evening.

I wonder if it is a combination of the drought from the past few years and now the large amounts of rain we have had. There are also rumors that it has to do with a large number of new wells dug here in the valley. I hope the state and the feds take a closer look. Something is going on and maybe the USGS needs to be called in.
