Natural Tunnel State Park Event To Feature Re-enactors, Battle

DUFFIELD, Va. – Natural Tunnel State Park is hosting “Siege at the Wilderness Road Blockhouse” on May 31 through June 1 at the park’s blockhouse replica, overlooking Rye Cove.
The event features re-enactors, merchants and craftsmen, plus a battle re-enactment at the park, located in Scott County along U.S. Highway 23/58, between Clinchport and Duffield.
Visitors will be able to walk through an 18th century encampment of Kentucky-bound settlers, watch as other travelers arrive on horseback, see various period crafts demonstrated and visit a Woodland Indian camp.
They can also visit the Blockhouse, a representation of John Anderson’s fortified home.
Anderon’s actual home was located near Big Moccasin Gap, just above the Tennessee line, in Scott County.
The blockhouse replica was built in 2003 as part of a project by the Daniel Boone Trail Association.
Saturday’s highlights include children’s activities; book signings by local authors, including Tony Scales (“Natural Tunnel”); a horse race at 11 a.m.; and a battle at 1 p.m. between frontiersman and Indians.
Sunday’s high points will be a worship service at 11 a.m. and a frontier wedding at 1 p.m.
