Providing Food For Kids While School Is Out
As schools let out for summer, many children in this region lose their opportunity during the day to have a nutritious meal.
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee has announced its sponsorship of the 2009 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) at Central Elementary School, 735 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Bristol, TN 37620.
Any child under the age of 18 in need of a meal throughout the summer is encouraged to attend. Pre-registration is not required. Lunch is available at this site Monday – Thursday, June 8 through July 30, from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m.
Eighty-seven percent of children in Feeding America’s client households, who receive subsidized school meals, often go hungry during the summer months because their families are unaware of the Summer Food Service Program.
In Northeast Tennessee 47% of children receive free or subsidized meals at school.
Through the summer food service program children can receive a free summer meal. The Food Bank’s sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program is made possible through a grant from “America Gives Back” (formerly charity projects entertainment fund) and support from the Corporation for National and Community Service VISTA/Americorp program.
For more information on the Central Elementary School Summer Food Service visit the site during the hours listed above or call the Food Bank at (423)477-4053.

kerdan93,I understand where you’re coming from.I’ve raised a son in times like this.East Tennesse has always been one of the lowest paying and now harder hit areas. My husband lost his job also. The comment from(new to the area) was uncalled for.Guess they never had a hard time. They’d never make it if they did.People who do their best to take care of their kids are tops in my book.Good luck and lots of prayers for you.
I am very grateful for this program. I have two children and my husband works and I got laid off and I am not making much at all with unemployment. so this helps a lot. I have been looking for two months for a job and guess what? I can’t find anything so these programs help a lot.
Yeah, there are a few who shouldn’t have children. But a lot of these people have lost their jobs. And remember some of our greatest and historical Americans came from poor families. Not to demean all rich kids but I would hate to think the rich brats were all we had to depend on.
I’m shocked to learn that 47% of East TN children are on free or subsidized lunch program. I commend the Second Harvest for their efforts because no child should go hungry. However, seems to me that too many people are having children who cannot care for them. This is a travesty. Seems to me that birth control should be given to the parents.
I second that. What a wonderful thing.
Kudos to you Second Harvest. A lot of kids and their parents will bless you. Thanks for providing this service.
