Protests Planned For 4th Of July Holiday

Local organizers of the “tea party” movement to protest federal government size and spending are planning two events in Bristol this holiday weekend – events that are among hundreds scheduled nationwide.

“There are over 1,300 registered tea parties going off on the Fourth of July, and this is a movement that is not going to stop,” said Brian Rieck, organizer of a July 4 event in downtown Bristol. “We need to put the government back in the hands of the people.”

On Saturday, participants plan to march and ride in the city’s Fourth of July parade before demonstrating in front of the courthouse in Bristol, Va. They will meet at the Food City on Euclid Avenue between 8 and 9 a.m. for the parade, and then rally outside the courthouse at noon.

On Monday, tea party protesters will hold a bring-your-own-picnic and rally starting 4 p.m. at Sugar Hollow Park, where the program will begin shortly before 6 p.m. Organizers anticipate more than 1,000 people will attend. The focus of the Monday rally is carbon dioxide legislation and the 2010 Congressional election.

“We still need independence,” Rieck said of the reason for the Independence Day event. “We don’t need to become dependent on the government for everything that we say, do and hear. We fought for freedom, and now we’re giving it away.”

Strother Smith, organizer of the Monday event, said the idea of “tea parties” – protests in the spirit of the 1773 event where American colonists dumped British tea into the Boston harbor to protest taxation – is continuing to grow across the nation.

“These are new people who have not been politically involved before,” Smith said.

“We have a runaway government. … This is supposed to be a nation of the rule of law, and the Congress and the President have just absolutely set the rule of law aside,” Smith said. “There are an awful lot of people that, if it’s required, they’re going to go a whole lot further than protesting if this keeps up.”

Both events are directing part of the message to longtime U.S. Rep. Rick Boucher, D-Abingdon, whom organizers hope to see replaced in Congress next year, along with others in Congress who support President Barack Obama.

“It’s time to clean house,” Rieck said. “If the word incumbent is in front of their name, they are suspect, and as far as I’m concerned they have a target on their back for losing their seat.”

Boucher, though invited, said he does not plan to attend the rally. Though organizers said the event is nonpartisan, Boucher said it’s clearly being held by his opposing party.

“I don’t think it’s in their interest or mine for me to be addressing what essentially is a Republican rally,” Boucher said Thursday.

At least three people are considering a run against Boucher in next year’s Congressional election, and Smith said one of them might announce his candidacy Monday. U.S. Rep. Phil Roe and state Delegate Terry Kilgore also are scheduled to speak.

Rieck and Smith said major initiatives working their way through Washington, such as a cap-and-trade bill to limit carbon dioxide emissions and a national health care program, are blatantly unconstitutional.

Boucher said much of the information being disseminated by the group about cap-and-trade legislation is “just not true.” He said the bill will create jobs and spur technological advances. He also said the economic stimulus bills passed recently – another target of complaints by the “tea party” activists – was necessary to keep the nation from entering the next Great Depression and has been a benefit to the region.

But Rieck said the main message of the tea parties is that people need to wake up – whatever their political views.

“I think they should finally get involved in what their government is doing,” Rieck said. “Start reading, not just say, well, you know, ‘I’m only one vote.’ One vote matters.”

According to the local weather reports this morning. July 3, 2008 a record low of 55 was made. Then today July 3, 2009 a new record low was made at 51. And that the average low for this date is 63. So the fact is that two years running we have set new record lows when we are suppose to have global warming occuring. Rep Boucher are you paying attenion since you are here this week. This is no Republican lie, just facts that the proponents of cap and trade choose to ignore. Again everyone this is another reason to attend the two upcoming tea parties. Come out Monday night Rep Boucher and try and work with your citizens!

I just saw on the news where the healthcare bill that the senate is looking at would fine people up to $1,000 if they refused to carry a form of healthcare. So much for the gov. not interferring with our lives as much now. Must be nice in that dream world that some people are living in now.

Very good posting Radio Bill, enjoyed reading it. I’m not a member of any party either, but I do vote each and every election. This crazy spending has got to stop, and we do need elected officials ( city, state, and federal )that will at least listen to ALL the people in their district…. without being so closed minded.

Obama is passing more and more gov. controll of our daily lives and the unemployment rate is the highest it has been in 26yrs and we are now better off. Sorry I disagree.  Bush was a horrible president but Obama is as bad or worse with his spending when the country is broke. I know it’s still Bush’s fault. It’s time Obama starting to answer for Obama not Bush. Boucher has turned into a lap puppy for the democrat agenda no matter how it could effect this region. His vote on the cap and trade bill in my humble opinion proves that.

I totally agree with you. I say AMEN, AMEN, and AMEN again!!!!! While the liberals want to distract us and make us think we are unpatriotic by voicing what little say we have left as conservatives, the sad part is going to be when THEY finally realize far too late that not only have our freedoms been taken away, and our voices quelled, but that THEIR FREEDOMS ARE GONE AS WELL, AND THAT THEY HAVE NO VOICE EITHER. Again I say right on michaelz!!!

If people are going to celebrate their freedoms they had better do it now. the Democrats are destroying this country at an alarming rate. NO I’m not a republican or a democrat but I’m not a Lemming either. Political parties are for people that don’t posess the ability to think for themselves or see what is really happening.

While a few people will be out protesting what they feel is bad about this country, many more will be celebrating our freedoms with their families and enjoying another July 4th.  This year is especially great in that the Iraq war is winding down, the two year economic slump is bottoming out and the govt meddling in our personal freedom the past few years is gone.

I thought boucher is suppose to represent the people of sw va. I guess he is to busy handing out money to people if they will ride to washington and read the scripted message about healthcare. Just to give a heads up I emailed Bouchers office to have him explain his cap and trade vote. Still havent heard back been a week.

Attending a Tea Party does not mean you belong to one party Rep. Boucher. I’m not registered with any party and look forward to attending the Monday night rally and possibly the Saturday rally. I can understand that Rep. Boucher might not want to attend Saturday in favor of being with his family, as the article states that he has been invited to both. However, Monday night is an opportunity for many to attend. And would be a good opportunity to take a few minutes to tell everyone what is true as he believes it. And at the same time to be able to listen to what is being said in his district. It takes courage to stand up and listen to dissent, yet is this not what he suppose to do? He represents all the voters of this district. If this might be too much for Rep. Boucher then come 2010 it may very well be the time to remove Rep Boucher back to Mr. Boucher as a citizen. I urge everyone to try and attend these forums. Because no matter what the party the elected official is in they must remember the people they represent. And if they do not then it is the responsibilities of the people to vote them out. We need to keep our country great and it starts here and now!
