Senator Barack Obama’s Town Hall appearance in Southwest Virginia has many wondering can he win over the Appalachian area.
The traditionally predominately Republican region could be a stumbling block for the democratic nominee. This is an area where voters favored Senator Hillary Clinton over Obama just months ago. Now political pundits are left to ask, if Illinois senator has enough momentum to sway the democrats and borderline republicans.
Tricities.com reporter Nicki Mayo talks with Virginia Tech Professor Robert E. Denton, Jr., PhD. about Obama’s chances of carrying the Commonwealth. Dr. Denton is director of the Center for Leadership Development. He has also served as Political Analyist for WSLS-TV in Roanoke, VA since 1992.

Graham,
I’m not black either. But thank you for showing more of your true side.
Oh how funny
BristolBound,
After that last post about your color, Ray Charles, could see your problem. You are backing black and not party. You, with some stealth cleverness, and some literary education were able to defend what we know now could be black militantism. I suppose you also support Louie Farrakan. I will not dignfy any further dialog with a closet racist.
The end.
SEMPER FI
And Tali, not that it should be an issue at all, I’m not White, and would never assume because someone isn’t white they have intelligence issues.
Tali, please, please don’t take my post as stereotyping you because you are Indian - it has nothing to do with that. I don’t see race as an issue at all. I admit, I was deeply offended by your statement about the youth of our country, because frankly, I would fall into your stereotyped group, while I do work extremely hard in every aspect of my life. I also know many peers that work hard for everything they have, whether it be college, career, homemakers. I took personal offense to the broad swipe, and I agree that I was too heated. I don’t think you are not intelligent, and better wording would have been more appropriate, I just think that taking broad swipes that target a group of people, in this case young people, are dangerous. I don’t understand how you came to the conclusion that I was attacking your race. I have nothing but respect for Native Americans. My family has deep Cherokee roots, and I DON’T have any prejudices. Yes, I did assume you were a McCain supporter, and why I don’t really know. I am glad, however, to see while we may have a vast differnce of opinion on many fronts, we both agree regarding Bush. Tali, I am very opinionated when it comes to stereotypes, whether it be based on race, religion, gender, etc… As for Mr. Graham, his response on another post for reasons not to support Obama was a link to pictures of him with his family, both here and in Africa, and again, I was deeply offended because his response supports stereotyping ideals that I hope we can all one day get past.
Graham, I think you’re statement proves that you are the one who is offended by someone who does not carbon copy your beliefs. I don’t agree with you, you don’t agree with me. We both have that right, and the ability to debate our positions. I’m not attacking. I do, however, find offense in statements that stereotype an entire group of people, without substance or reason. And because I don’t share the same beliefs as you, you are offended. I’m simply arguing my point, and I try to avoid stereotypes, instead of trying to create and harbor them by posting a link to pictures of a person with a multicultural family as means to sway an opinion, or stereotyping the entire youth of our country as welfare recipients. A person can challenge a political view and sometimes, sometimes get results. Beliefs and values are alot harder to debate, because many of us are very ethnocentric, meaning that we feel our beliefs are the only correct beliefs, and that every one else should believe the same. I love to have personal debate with anyone - I think it is a beautiful thing. I will not debate, any further, an issue that someone has based on someone’s culturalism, by providing pictures such as what you have done, that expects us to agree with you based on stereotypes. I’m frankly tired of people like you not being able to accept the fact that others may have a different opinion, instead telling them when they offer their opinion that they are unpatriotic, flat out wrong, or attacking others. Lastly, I’m not into the whole Blog type deal, because I appreciate the personal nature of human interaction. I have never posted to this site in the past, until tonight, and the only posts that I addressed are those which have no substance. Again, I’m posting about something that I feel deeply concerned about, and you can expect that because I am so concerned that it may be heated, just as you are out of your concern. I have no problem with the fact that you do not support a political candidate. I have a problem with you acting as if he is the only politician swaying the facts, and as if McCain isn’t also a politician, or glorified salesman that most are. I’m sorry that we don’t agree, and if my posts were in fact too heated. I also noticed on this post that you are a Marine, and I would like to thank you for defending our freedoms, which allow me to sit here tonight and speak my opinion.
Mr Bristolbound,
I must have mistakenly thought this was a forum for discussing news articles and expressing opinions in a respectful way. So now it has became a forum to launch personal attacks when someone says something you don’t agree with?
You accuse me of making bizarre assumptions? You “assumption” is that I am a McCain supporter and base your whole character assination along with an attempt to question my intelligence on that?
Excuse me, I am supporting Mr Barr, the ONLY alternative to the corrupt two party system. (who is making false assumptions again?)
Do you ever go and actually look at how the house and senate votes? You might do good to do that and see for yourself “who” blocks sound energy policy.
As far as Bush, I have long since consigned him to the biggest failure of modern times. We should ALL be ashamed that we ever allowed him to occupy the white house ,you and I included.
My “intelligence gap?“ Sounds to me like someone assumes(another assumption?) since I am not white I am less intelligent? So why are you voting for Obama again? How am I to interpret your post other than since I am not white I am lacking active neurons in my gray matter??
Let me tell you first hand about stereotypes, they are hurtful, insulting and belittling. I do not toss them out and you will be wise to not go there. Do you really think you can discuss stereotypes with a Native American?
I gather from your response, you have already stereotyped me as a dumb old biased Indian who you find funny? Do you really want to discuss politics or do you want to attack people’s opinions and intelligence?
BristolBound,
I agree with Tali and would encourage you to go back to the complete history of this dialog. It is plain to see that you have all the answers. Maybe you should come out from behind your keyboard and run for President as an independent. You have countered most every comment with blind and non-factual attacks with no solutions-just like the ones you support. I was bold enough to put my phone number and real name as a statement of full disclosure. I love this country and am willing to fight out in the open for it. My desire would be to meet with you in some type of public debate. It is easy to hide behind a fictitious name and a keyboard as your means to criticize anyone that does not carbon copy your misled beliefs. Are you part of the solution, or part of the problem?
Semper Fi,
Again,
Mike Graham
Tali, you are one funny person. Race may not be an issue, but you certainly have some prejudices that need to be resolved. To assume that because one supports someone other than McCain doesn’t work for a living, and to claim that young people all recieve governement benifits based soley on your opinion without substantiation from facts while criticizing Obama supporters for not paying attention to facts is the most hillarious read I’ve come across in a while. And to even go further to argue that fuel costs all relate to democratic policies when Bush argued during his intial WH bid that the democrats had let fuel costs get too expensive….gas was what then, $1.39 a gallon? After having 8 years its almost $4 a gallon right here in Bristol. And by the way, I am young, and I do work for everything I have or want without seeking government hand-outs. I’m not searching for freebies nor have I been offered one! I don’t get concerned about people regarding which politician they support, but I do get concerned over people like you who try to skew everything in order to make it fit into your personal intelligence gap while tossing around stereotypes as if they are matter of fact, when the only matter of fact, as evident by your comments, is that you have many problems with your assumptions.
I have previously commented regarding this before but feel I need to again add my 2 cents worth.
Firstly, I am a Native American so race to me is not an issue unless you just don’t think what I say doesn’t count somehow.
You Obama supporters have me worried. Have you REALLY listened to the man? Have you looked at his voting record in the Senate? Have you wondered how this health insurance initiative will be paid for? Passing that cost on to people who work for a living and are business owners will break the back of this country. Have you ever heard the old saying “don’t look a gift horse in the mouth?“ Wonder why, think he has no teeth?
Democrats traditionally “take” from people who work for a living and might have been smart enough to work, plan and save. These days, it seems a lot less people actually work. In my opinion, the majority of young people already recieve a government check. These people will certainly vote for this man, after all, more free services!! Ask yourself,(if you work) can you afford for your government to “take” any more from you?
What about the greatest issue of our time, oil? Have you not seen your grocery bill double in the past year? I have. You are likely not eating more, it all relates back to oil. Did you hear any plans from Obama? Did you hear any ideas that will give you some relief? I didn’t!
Democrats ALONE (spurred on by lobbyists) have also traditionally tied up ANWAR, the Bakken oil shales out west, all offshore drilling, coal gasification , blocked new refineries and new nuclear power plants, ALL reasons you are now paying the highest gasoline/diesel costs in history. Now, you are wanting to put the most liberal, inexperienced “tax and spend” Democrat in history in the White House? You “obamites” better do some research and stop following the frenzied promises of free “stuff”. I have always worked hard for what I want or need. I bear great suspicion for anyone or anything(like a government) wanting to “give” me something. Nothing is free people!!! My ancestors were given free trinkets, blankets, diseases and religious conversion. Look what all this free stuff cost a people. Now, tell me an Obama government is going to give you something.
Tali
