Man Arrested After Calling Deputy To Set Up Drug Deal

A Hawkins County Sheriff’s deputy got a call early Friday morning last week and thought it was a prank call. The caller told the deputy that he was looking for some marijuana and wondered if he could help him get some. After a few minutes, the deputy realized the caller was serious. Police had been at Larry Jones’ Surgoinsville trailer a month earlier, conducting a drug investigation, when the deputy left his business card with Jones.

A month later, Jones apparently didn’t know who he was dialing when he went on his search for pot. The deputy set up the transaction, then several officers went to the trailer, and after a deal was agreed upon by Jones and two officers, other officers made entrance into the residence and arrested Jones and Tammy Shelters. Pills were found at the residence, and Jones and Shelters were jailed on $15,000 bond.

Sheriff Roger Christian says he wishes all criminals would put forth this kind of effort to get caught. “Any time anyone wants to turn themselves in,“ says Christian, “just give us a call.“
