A Marion, Va., man is out on bond after being charged with four counts of shooting into an occupied dwelling.

Charles William Carter, 44, was arrested early Friday after shots were fired shortly after midnight into a residence at the Severt Hills apartment complex in Marion, police said.

No one was injured in the shooting.

“From what I can tell, there was an altercation between Mr. Carter and another gentleman approximately four months prior,” Marion Police Sgt. Shawn Conklin said.

Conklin said the other gentleman involved in the altercation was not home at the time of the shooting; a woman and two children were inside.

The police department responded shortly after midnight to a call of shots fired. Witnesses said the shots appeared to come from a silver Buick with tinted windows that then left the scene.

Carter was arrested a few hours later.

Marion Police Lt. Andrew Moss said additional charges might be issued related to property damage caused by the shooting.

Each charge is a Class 4 felony, which according to state code carries a possible penalty of two to 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.

Conklin said Carter had been released on bond Monday. The Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon would not provide the bond amount nor other information; an official there said he could not provide a mug shot because Carter was no longer at the jail.
