A recent fire at the Kentucky Fried Chicken in Grundy, Va. remains under investigation this morning, as the cause of the fire is still unknown.

The fire occurred on April 16 and immediately the Commonwealth’s Attorney Office requested the involvement of the state police arson unit.

“With the KFC fire being the third fire along Highway 460 within the past eight months, there was concern regarding the cause of the fire,“ Commonwealth’s Attorney Tamara Neo said.  “Upon my request, the State Police were on scene for their initial investigation within hours of the fire being extinguished.  They examined the remaining structure, the areas of the largest damage, and any patterns apparent in the remains.  From that examination, they have determined that fire appeared to be in the cooking area, but the exact cause remains undetermined.”

At this point the fire has not been ruled as suspicious or intentionally set. “An undetermined fire, simply means, that at this point, the cause cannot be proven,” Neo said.

The call for the fire came into 911 at around 2:32 a.m.  Crews from the Grundy Volunteer Fire Department spent the next five and a half hours fighting the blaze.

“The Grundy Volunteer Fire Department and all other responding volunteer crews should be praised for their efforts in fighting each of these recent fires,“ Neo said.  “In each case, the Department kept the fire from traveling to other, immediately surrounding buildings and businesses.  Their hard work kept these fires from becoming an even greater loss to the community.“
