Kent Williams is sworn in as the Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
Breaking News: The House has reconvened after a recess and voted for Carter County Rep. Kent Williams (R) as the Speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives.
The vote was in favor of Williams with 50 votes to Rep. Jason Mumpower’s 49 votes.
The race was close in the House, where Republicans have a one-seat majority. Kent Williams is the first Republican speaker of the Tennessee House in 40 years.
After the election of Williams, Rep. Mumpower requested that the Republicans be allowed a 30-minute recess before the voting took place for Speaker Pro Tempore.
In the Senate, Ron Ramsey was again elected Senate Speaker.
Selecting new speakers was among the first business as the legislature got started Tuesday with Republicans positioned to take
control of both chambers.
Ramsey, of Blountville, defeated Democratic Senate Minority Leader Jim Kyle of Memphis in a 19-14 vote along party lines.

News Channel 11’s George Jackson is at the State Capitol and told us things got a little heated shortly before the recess was requested.
Two East Tennessee Republicans are poised to take control of the House and Senate. State Senator Ron Ramsey of Sullivan County is expected to be re-appointed Speaker of the Senate making him Lieutenant Governor. Oh Yeah, Go Kent Williams! Show the GOP party and the State of Tennessee that the CITIZENS of this state and Eastern Tennessee are not going to put up with “rigged” political shoe ins- Jason Mumpower- Ramsey’s little boy. Bristol- just look at the corruption of these two local boys…better stop them now before they steal what the stock market hasnt already from you. People with stock in King Pharmceuticals…beware…Jason Mumposer taking “free” private jet rides for them isnt good news for the people of this area…maybe the guy sitting next to him on that free ride was the local Chancery Judge John S. McLellan III, ya know, the one that owns a a substantial amount of stock in King and fixing the recent civil court case….kind of like he did by giving back a local boy his illegal gambling machines under the rouse of Civil procedure. Investigate all three of these local boys…they hide nothing…its all in records…they just dont think they have to follow the laws….just the ordinary local people. Want proof…visit Bristol Courthouse Records….its all public records including what lawyers are on the take with them.
It seems as if those who cling to dogma and party politics are being defeated. That is exciting. The Tennessee legislature needs to work on many issues this year and move away from the right wing dogma that paralyzed the state (and the Republican party) last year. Good for Williams! How dare the “party” tell any of us how to vote. David Davis learned that lesson.
(cowboyup) I’m glad that Kent Williams won over Jason Mumpower. Kent is for the people of Carter County and we need more people like him in office! He has a backbone of his own and he’s not a puppet on a string that other people tell him what to do.That’s what’s wrong with half the people in politics now…other people telling them what to do or what to say and it’s about time that we have someone like Mr. Williams in office, that’s not like that. I voted for him this last time to elect him into office and I’ll do the same thing again regardless of what policial party he chooses to go with. As for you Bunker and commonsense…I don’t remember seeing your names on the ballot to run for this office, and if you think that you two could do any better than what Mr. Kent Williams is doing for the people of Carter County and the State of Tennesee, then why don’t the two of you run and see what you can do better! I seriously doubt that the two of you could do HALF of what Mr. Williams has done or that you’d even win the votes to get into the office, I’m for one that wouldn’t vote for either one of you!
Also, I’m a proud republican and you’re not the only person to have spent time on the campaign trail. Williams isn’t CONCEITED, but he is CONCEDED about following your GOP drones into the future. Maybe you ought to look at your boy Mumpower. He was sure on Monday he had this wrapped up. And you can’t say I’m uneducated because I did hear his interviews the last couple of days. It looks as if he is the CONCEITED one along with your pinky.
Oh yeah, get your quotes right. This is a separate page, you think that Genius political pinky would know how to look back and see who said what. So since you can’t get it right I’ll do it for you.
Remarkland stated, “I’m glad he doesn’t play party politics!“..... Where have you been, commonsense, didn’t Williams cast his vote for a REPUBLICAN.
Curt656 stated, “The country needs more Kent Williams.“.....No not a liar, a man that does what is needed for us, the people, not what is needed for the GOP.
And on another note:
Conceited: having or showing an excessive high opinion of oneself
Conceded: to acknowledge grudgingly or hesitantly; “that it might be a good idea”
And that is your vocabulary and spelling lesson for the day. Hopefully your genius pinky has learned something today, and is one step closer to knowintg all.
Jerome C. did so much, you didn’t really pay too much attention to what little he did. Williams did more in his first twenty minutes in office than J.C. did in his entirety. Williams is not a liar and has done what he set out to do since he took office. If the republican party of Tennessee has to send out a letter to its representatives stating, “If you don’t play by our rules you will be kicked out of our little club,“ then it sounds as if we as republicans need to grow up and quit acting like first graders.
By the way, if you didn’t like Williams you didn’t have to vote for him. Williams never lied of betrayed anyone. You can look at his voting record. But I guess if there’s so much knowledge in that pinky you would have already done that and then made a better decision back in November. Just because a representative votes for what he feels is better for the people of his region doesn’t mean he has close affiliation with the Democratic Party. And if you think Williams stepped across your “political lines,” again you don’t know all you think you do. If you really looked at today’s vote you would have found that Williams voted for a republican.
Also, if you are the political genius of Carter County maybe you should have been on the ticket last August instead of J.C. Actually, I have a better idea maybe you should run in two years when Williams comes up for re-election
One more thing, People seem to forget the crooked things Ramsey has done in the past. I remember years ago when we were in a huge budget crisis and he saw no problem claiming mileage for his trips to Nashville, WHEN HE RODE WITH SOMEONE ELSE! That is crooked and don’t think he has changed much. Kent Williams is the good to contrast the Ramsey bad.
Kent Williams is a true man of the people, he goes to bat for people and gets results. Who cares who voted for who and what party they were on. Kent Williams is a good man and will make sure the people of TN interest is first and foremost, not the political machine and the good ole boy network. GROW UP and become a human being, not a party drone! I thought we had moved past that in this area, but apparently not. Kent Williams will help East TN so support him or shut up!
Watch out it looks like the big bad (or big mouth) Marklands of Carter County has spoken…….oooooo!
I agree that Williams did the dumbest thing in the world today and turned his back on his voters, unless you are a democrat that supported him and as it appears on here that is what the case is. Williams made a big statement in Sunday’s paper that he supported Mumpower and the complete party and that his view were in line with the GOP…he lied big time on that. I have lost all hope and respect I have for him. I have more political experience in my pinkie than anyone on here and I can say that you all are very uneducated in the political realm. Williams had better watch his back and that is not is a threatening way that is meant to say that he stepped on a lot of feet and now those feet will kick him in the backside and can make his political life rough. I didn’t think he was this conceded with himself but at least now we know.
For those of us that were there on the campaign trail really don’t appreciate the fact that Kent betrayed us. Jerome C. called him out and said that he was a democrat disguised as a republican. He was spot on! Williams denied that he had any affiliation and close ties with the democrats and I guess his true colors showed today.
Williams personally looked me in the eye and told me that he would not do this type of things. I can’t believe that he is this much of a fake and phony. I am so disgusted and let down!
Jimmy Naifeh can get the crank out now and insert it into Williams back and start winding so that his little boy toy can run around and be his patsy. I guess Williams is now a member of the Memphis Maphia? Right?
remarkland stated-“The country needs more Kent Williamses.”…….yeah more liars is what we need in politics!
Curt 656 stated-“I’m glad he doesn’t play party politics!”……….. Where have you been? Did you not see what happened today. This is the dirty politics at its best. Ill scratch your back and you wind mine.
Curt656-Well said!!!!!!
..Bones say Mumpower look like man punched in gut..Bones say people want things done and dont care about petty politics..Bones say represent US. bones never lie
