ABINGDON, Va. – Alpha Natural Resources will build its new corporate headquarters in Bristol, the governor’s office announced early Wednesday.
According to the announcement, the project, which results from the company’s July merger with Maryland-based Foundation Coal, will create 69 jobs and retain 131 in the area.
The $21 million building, to be located in the city’s new Sugar Hollow Business Complex, is slated for completion in 2011. It will be just a few miles from the company’s current headquarters in Abingdon.
Included in the company’s incentive package from the state is $3.4 million in Tobacco Region Opportunity Funds and $1 million from the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.
With the merger, this homegrown corporation is the nation’s third largest coal company, employing 6,200 people and operating 60 mines and 14 preparation plants.
