GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – For David Phelps, music is all about finding inspiration.
And making more.
This Christian singer recently released “O Holy Night,” a DVD of Christmas-themed songs, including renditions of “Hark, The Herald,” “What Child is This,” “Away in a Manger” and “Mary, Did You Know?”
“It’s very positive music, inspirational,” Phelps said during a recent telephone interview. “It’s kind of a combination between a band and an orchestra – very theatrical, dramatic. That’s more of what I’m known for.”
Since landing on the music scene with his first album in 2000, the Dallas, Texas, native has built a loyal following, playing as many as 100 shows a year.
Phelps 39, lives near Columbia, Tenn., and has enjoyed hits with releases like “No More Night,” a previous live DVD.
Members of Phelps’s family like to sing, he said.
“And it kind of grew out of that,” he said, laughing. “When I was 18, I started doing concerts.”
Phelps lent his soulful tenor to the Gaither Vocal Band for eight years and toured all over the country.
Today, as a solo artist and leader of his own six-person band, Phelps focuses on presenting “positive family entertainment,” he said.
On Nov. 25, Phelps is showcasing his sound at the Niswonger Performing Arts Center in Greeneville, Tenn. as part of a fundraising event presented by the Takoma Regional Hospital Foundation.
“We laugh,” Phelps said. “I have a comedian that travels out with me. It’s just a lot of music and singing, as well as time to stop and laugh. And because I sing gospel music, I have a chance to inspire people and give them some hope and maybe help them on their way.”
