Krystal Patton was feeling it on January 14.
The Lenoir-Rhyne (N.C.) University sophomore’s shots were falling, her intensity level was high and she made big play after big play.
The end result was a career-high 19 points as L-R posted a 69-66 women’s basketball win over South Atlantic Conference foe Brevard.
“That was one of her best games,” Lenoir-Rhyne coach Todd Starkey told the Hickory Daily Record. “We tell players that are on the bench that you have to prepare yourself for when it’s your opportunity and take advantage. [Patton] took full advantage of it. The reason we won this game today is she came ready to play today.”
The former Chilhowie High School star was rewarded for the performance. She earned her first start of the season and second of her collegiate career on Saturday in a win over Lincoln Memorial and finished with seven points and three rebounds.
Patton is averaging 5.8 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest this season.
Buckhannon’s best
Radford University junior Ashley Buckhannon had 19 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals on Saturday in the Highlanders’ 66-64 women’s basketball loss to Winthrop.
For the season, the former George Wythe High School standout is averaging 14.0 points, 2.7 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game.
Burleson buries 3-pointer
Freshman Blakeley Burleson helped the Tusculum College women’s basketball team improve to 12-4 on Saturday with a 91-70 win over Mars Hill.
Burleson buried a 3-pointer with 7:34 remaining for her only points. The former Tennessee High star has appeared in 14 games this season and has totaled 10 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.
Pippin’s progress
Coastal Carolina University freshman Savanah Pippin (Virginia High) pulled down four rebounds and also blocked a shot on Saturday in an 80-66 women’s hoops loss to High Point.
Pippin is averaging 1.7 points and 1.8 rebounds per game.
Crown’s Cook brothers
Through the first 11 games of the season, former Tennessee High standout Ethan Cook was averaging 5.6 points and 4.0 rebounds per game for the Crown College (Powell, Tenn.) men’s basketball team.
Another THS alum and Cook’s younger brother, Jaden Cook, also plays for the Royal Crusaders.
Kegley’s contributions
Marion High School graduate Brandon Kegley shined for the Davidson (N.C.) College men’s swim team during a dual meet victory over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.
Kegley finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.95), third in the 50 freestyle (22.20 seconds) and was on the victorious 200 freestyle relay team.
Maiden’s mile
Jakob Maidens (Lebanon) of Lenoir-Rhyne finished 11th overall in the men’s one-mile run at last month’s Appalachian State Invitational indoor track and field meet.
Maidens completed the event in 4:44.57.
