Charles Peter “Moe” Curcio, former head football coach at Bristol’s Virginia High School, passed away on Saturday in the Wellmont Hospice House after a long illness.
Curcio, a native of Lyndhurst, N.J., was a graduate of Emory & Henry College (1946-50) where he played football for the Wasps.
Upon graduation, Curcio coached at Meadowview, Glade Spring, Fries and Pulaski, before arriving as head football coach at Virginia High in 1953. Curcio remained in that position until 1957 and then became athletic director at VHS serving in that capacity until 1970.
Curcio was also instrumental in forming the annual Southwest Virginia Coaches Clinic.

ETSU takes win over Lipscomb
East Tennessee State University jumped out to a 17-2 lead en route to an 89-52 Atlantic Sun Conference win over Lipscomb on Saturday in the mini-dome.
Destiny Mitchell led the Bucs (5-14, 4-5) with 21 points and 13 rebounds while Natalie Pickwell scored 17 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 25 minutes of play.
Lipscomb (3-17, 1-8) shot just 26.7 percent from the field for the game.
E&H earns first ODAC win
Former Sullivan Central High School star Meredith Grant scored 13 points as Emory & Henry earned its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the season, a 71-53 victory over Randolph.
E&H (2-10, 1-9) also received 15 points, 11 rebounds and three assists from Kristie Langley.
Carter leads Wise to win
Senior point guard Amber Carter had 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals to help the University of Virginia’s College at Wise earn its first Mid-South Conference victory of the season, an 80-52 beatdown of Pikeville.
Chelsea Cluesman (Lee High) added 18 points, 10 rebounds and three assists for the winners.
Webb scores 37, VI upsets Cavs
T.T. Webb scored 37 points as Virginia Intermont upset nationally-ranked Montreat for an 86-73 Appalachian Athletic Conference road win over the Montreat Cavaliers. Ashley Grimm (Virginia High) added eight rebounds for the Cobras.
Johnson leads King over Barton
A clutch free throw by Brooke Johnson provided the winning margin as King College shocked Barton 53-52 for a Conference Carolinas triumph. Johnson finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

E&H loses to Lynchburg
Despite 25 points from Malcolm Green, Emory & Henry dropped a 79-68 decision to Lynchburg.
Harry West Jr. led Lynchburg with 18 points. Former George Wythe High School standout Tristan Boysaw played, but did not score for the Hornets.
Pikeville edges UVa-Wise
The University of Virginia’s College at Wise gave defending NAIA national champion Pikeville (Ky.) College all it could handle before dropping a 74-72 decision to the Bears on Saturday afternoon.
Josh Jordan led UVa-Wise with 24 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. The Highland Cavaliers had a chance to win the game but Travis Berry’s 3-point attempt in the final moments was off target.
Piccinini carries King
Eddie Piccinini poured in 30 points as King College outlasted Barton for a 98-82 Conference Carolinas victory. King improved to 7-0 in the conference and 15-3 overall.
Morris’ 32 leads VI over Montreat
Justin Morris scored 32 points to lead Virginia Intermont to an 85-82 win over Montreat Saturday night in the AAC.
Terrance Scott added 17 points for the Cobras (9-11, 2-6).

King splits matches
King College split its two matches in a tournament in Cincinnati. The Tornado beat Siena Heights (25-21, 25-15, 25-15), while Missouri Valley topped the Tornado, 19-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 15-8.
