Ahmad Bradshaw’s tumble into the end zone in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLVI not only gave the New York Giants the lead but it also made local history.
The former Graham High School star became the first player from the Mountain Empire to score a Super Bowl touchdown on Sunday night in the Giants’ 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots.
Bradshaw went in from six yards out with 57 seconds remaining, an awkward sequence in which the New England defense eased up and Bradshaw tried to fall down short of the goal line for time management purposes.
Still, it counted and the Giants held on for the victory.
Earlier on Super Sunday, analyst Steve Mariucci of the NFL Network had predicted Bradshaw would be the MVP of the big game. While that trophy went to Giants quarterback Eli Manning, Bradshaw had a solid night.
He gained 72 yards on 17 carries and also caught two passes for 19 yards.
It was the second championship for Bradshaw, who led New York in rushing in both Super Bowl XLII and XLVI.
Bradshaw became the fourth Southwest Virginian to be on two Super Bowl championship teams, joining Carroll Dale (Wise), Mike Compton (Richlands) and Heath Miller (Honaker) in the elite fraternity.
