During his first two collegiate seasons, Justin Malone was the top relief pitcher for the Georgia State University baseball team. This season, the former Abingdon High School star has been the Panthers’ best starting pitcher.
Malone is off to a sizzling start, compiling a 3-0 record and a 0.47 ERA through his first three outings.
He combined with relievers on shutouts against Western Illinois and Texas State, while also recording a win over Big Ten Conference member Iowa.
The junior right-hander already has one Colonial Athletic Association pitcher of the week honor to his credit.
Shepherd’s strikeouts
Tennessee Tech pitcher Matthew Shepherd is still searching for his first win of the season, but he’s already racked up some strikeouts.
Shepherd, a former star at Sullivan East High School, is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA for the Golden Eagles and has struck out a team-high 27 batters over his four outings.

Loudermilk blasting
Her collegiate career is only a couple of weeks old, but it’s been memorable so far for Walters State (Tenn.) Community College freshman Lindsay Loudermilk.
The Sullivan East High School graduate connected for two home runs and collected four RBIs on Friday as the Senators stomped Roane State, 9-1. Loudermilk smashed a two-run shot in the first and added another two-run homer in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Marie Chandler (Powell Valley) is 1-1 with one save for Walters State, while former Virginia High standout has started in the outfield.
Stallard is champ
Tonya Stallard (Virginia High) put on quite the encore on Feb. 20 in Annapolis, Md.
Competing for the U.S. Military Academy, Stallard won the women’s 60-meter hurdles at the Patriot League Indoor Track & Field Championships. She crossed the finish line in 8.84 seconds.
It was the second straight year she won the event.
