Yogi Berra once said “it ain’t over until it’s over.”
The Bristol White Sox found that out the hard way Wednesday night at Pulaski’s Calfee Park, losing to the Mariners 4-3 in an Appalachian League game.
The BriSox had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth and were three outs away from a win. The first two Mariner batters in the bottom of the ninth were easy outs, but that’s when the trouble began for Bristol.
Matthew Lane came out of Bristol’s bullpen to relieve Chris Bassitt to start the bottom of the ninth and Lane proceeded to retire the first two Pulaski batters.
But Lane then issued a walk to Jordy Lara, Dillon Hazlett followed with a single sending Lara to third and Efrain Nunez sent everyone home with a two-run double.
The BriSox broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the ninth as Rangel Ravelo collected a one-out double, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Bradley Salgado’s single.
Daurys Mercedes led the BriSox at the plate going 3-for-3.
Jean Duque started for Bristol on the mound going six innings giving up just four hits and two runs. Bassitt went two innings allowing two hits and no runs.
The BriSox are back at Pulaski tonight at 7.
Greeneville 5-1, Danville 4-6
Ernesto Genoves delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to score Ruben Sosa from second base with the winning run as the Astros won over the Braves 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader.
Danville came back to take the second game 6-1 as Dan Winnie (2-0, 1.93 ERA) earned the win going five innings, allowing five hits.
Elizabethton 9, Kingsport 3
Miguel Sano collected three hits, including a double and triple, while driving in two runs and scoring three to lead the Twins to a win over the Mets.
Burlington 9, Princeton 4
The Royals took advantage of six Rays’ errors to score four unearned runs in the win. Jose Rodriguez and Adrian Bringas each had two hits for Burlington.
Bluefield 6, Johnson City 4, 11 innings
David Arcila delivered a one-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to propel the Jays to a win over the Cardinals.
