LOCAL BRIEFS: UVa-Wise has new women's basketball coach

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Another coaching change recently took place for the University of Virginia’s College at Wise’s women’s basketball program.

Abby Hearn is no longer with the Highland Cavaliers, having departed the program after 13 games. UVa-Wise is 2-11 and has lost 11 straight since opening the season with victories over Morris and Voorhees.

Kristen Kunzman has been named interim coach and will make her debut in that position on Jan. 2 when the team travels to Union.

Kunzman becomes the Cavs’ fifth head coach in the last four years.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Young Harris edges Cobras

Virginia Intermont stayed with Young Harris throughout the game but fell to the Mountain Lions, 96-92.

Justin Morris led Cobras (8-6) with 25 points in the loss. He was joined in double-digit scoring by Marquette Knight (16), Daniel Ross (17), Jimmie Ross (11) and Joshua Hart (19).

LMU clips Tornado, 77-75

King College went on a 7-2 run late in the game but the Tornado came up just a little short in falling to Lincoln Memorial, 77-75, on Saturday.

Brian Hewitt attempted a 3-point attempt with seven seconds left in the game that would have given the Tornado the lead but the shot missed as LMU rebounded.

Hewitt led King (8-3) with 23 points as Eddie Piccinini added 17.
