PREP ROUNDUP: Northwood, Holston, Clintwood among softball winners

SALTVILLE, Va.Chelsey Cardwell and Kelsee Smith each had three hits and three RBIs as Northwood notched a 12-6 non-district softball win over Lebanon on Thursday afternoon.

Cardwell blasted a two-run home run in the third inning and was also the winning pitcher. Smith had a double and triple as well to help the Panthers’ attack.

Holston 3, Abingdon 2 (Game 1)
Holston 4, Abingdon 3 (Game 2)

Holston swept a doubleheader from Washington County rival Abingdon, taking a pair of one-run decisions.

In the opener, Devynne Stiltner drove in Mary Hand for the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Holston erased a 2-0 deficit as Megan Honaker tied
it with a two-run double in the fifth that scored Stiltner and Brittany Boyd.

That set the stage for Stiltner’s heroics. Debbie Proulex tripled for Abingdon in the opener.

In the second game, Brianna Thomas drove in the winning run as Holston (3-0) once again claimed a comeback victory. Faith Ritchie had tied the game with a RBI single.

Thomas and Honaker each had two hits in game two.

Morgan Lowe was the winning pitcher for the Cavaliers in both games.

Lauren Wilson hit a triple in the nightcap for Abingdon.

East 2, Central 0
Angel Trent fired a three-hit shutout as Sullivan East improved to 2-0 with a road win over Sullivan Central.
Trent struck out three and only one Central baserunner reached scoring position. Taylor Roberts and Maggie Brown provided the offense for East, each driving in a run in the victory.

Clintwood 7, Twin Springs 4
Winning pitcher Roxanne Hillman went 2-for-4 to help her own cause and Clintwood collected a non-district road win.

Patrick Henry 4, Battle 2
Katie Haynes had a two-run hit in the top of the eighth inning, giving Patrick Henry a victory over John Battle in a VHSL Benefit Game. Logan Moore had three hits for PH.
Ashley Bryant went 3-for-4 and Brittni Altmann homered to lead Battle.

PREP BASEBALL
J.I. Burton 7, Rye Cove 0
Caleb Daniels pitched a one-hitter and also went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs as J.I. Burton blanked Rye Cove. Nate Large added two RBIs and two stolen bases for the Raiders.

Powell Valley 10, Coeburn 2
Lucas Fannon and Gil Lusk combined to go 5-for-7 with five RBIs as Powell Valley powered past non-district rival Coeburn.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Northeast 85, D-B 30
Dobyns-Bennett was completely dominated in dropping a decision to Clarksville Northeast in the quarterfinals of the TSSAA Class AAA state tournament in Murfreesboro.
D-B (22-12) was just 11-of-51 from the field (21.6 percent), fell behind 12-2 to start the game and never recovered. Tyler Ailshie led the Indians with 11 points and six rebounds.

Boysaw, Russell honored
George Wythe’s Tristan Boysaw and Joey Russell took the top honors on the All-Hogoheegee District boys basketball team released on Thursday.
Boysaw earned player of the year accolades after averaging 14 points, six assists, five steals and five steals per game and scored more than 1,000 career point.
Russell was selected as coach of the year after leading GW to the district’s regular season and tournament titles.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Miller honored in Region D
J.I. Burton High School junior Ra’Shelle Miller was selected as the Region D player of the year after leading the Raiders to a state runner-up finish.
Miller averaged 19.6 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.6 steals and 2.6 assists per game.
J.J. Kelly’s Robin Dotson (Division 2) and J.I. Burton’s Mike Goforth (Division 1) were Region D’s top coaches.

Wilmoth named Hogoheegee’s best
Patrick Henry High School sophomore Cadence Wilmoth was selected as the Hogoheegee District player of the year 17.2 points, 10 rebounds and 4.5 blocks per game.
Chilhowie’s Mark Halsey and Patrick Henry’s Tommy Thomas shared coach of the year honors.

BOYS SOCCER
John Battle 10, Patrick Henry 1
Matt Fleenor scored four goals and Derek Maiden added two goals and two assists as John Battle crushed non-district foe Patrick Henry.
Jed Owens, Brent Swiney, Alex Posey and Andrew Fleenor also scored goals for Battle, with Owens also dishing out two assists. Goalkeeper Dalton Booher made seven saves.
Battle posted a 5-1 victory in the girls game.
