According to Tazewell High School principal Keith Hovis, Terry Smith was selected as the new head football coach at Tazewell High School on Friday.

A 1987 graduate of Abingdon High School where he was a standout quarterback, Smith has previous head coaching experience at Jefferson Forest and Virginia High. Smith led VHS from 2004 to 2008.
Former Tazewell coach Bobby Wyatt resigned June 14 after guiding the Bulldogs to a 34-26 record.

Smith, who played defensive back at Virginia Tech, served a graduate assistant coach at both Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. His coaching resumes include stops at Lebanon, Brookville, Nottoway, Coeburn and Radford as an assistant.

Johnson breaks record

NHRA Full Throttle Series Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson from Greeneville, Tenn., will try to build off his track record top speed in qualifying as he starts eliminations Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio from the second spot.

Johnson powered his Mopar Dodge Avenger to a Summit Motorsports Park track record speed of 209.30 mph during a 6.602-second run Friday night. Jeg Coughlin was a tick quicker at 5.592 to claim the No. 1 qualifying spot in a 16-car Pro Stock field separated by less than one-tenth second.

Johnson, currently second in the NHRA Pro Stock standings, pulled double duty Saturday in the K&N Horsepower Challenge. He defeated Ron Krisher in the opening round before bowing to eventual winner Greg Anderson in the semifinals.

The Greeneville, Tenn. native is one of the hottest drivers on the circuit, with two runnerup finishes, eight semifinal appearances in 12 events and two No. 1 qualifier awards, including one last week at his home track of Bristol Dragway. Johnson will face Shane Gray in the opening round this morning at 11.

MOTOCROSS

Osborne fares well

Abingdon’s Zach Osborne has posted three straight podium finishes in the FIM World Grand Prix Series.

The latest podium came Sunday at the FIM World Motocross Championship in Teutschenthal, German. Osborne finished fourth and third in the two motos en route to a third place showing overall.
Osborne, son of former NHRA Pro Stock racer Mark Osborne, has competed several times at Muddy Creek Raceway in Blountville, Tenn.

SOFTBALL

Hamilton signs with Wise

John I. Burton’s April Hamilton recently signed a letter of intent to play at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
Hamilton posted a .468 batting average while getting on base at a .593 clip this past season. She also compiled a .976 fielding percentage.

TRACK AND FIELD

Monal advances

East Tennessee State University sprinter Duronal Monal (Belle Glade, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals of the 200 meters Saturday at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, located at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Monal, a two-time Atlantic Sun Conference champion in the 200, qualified for the semis after finishing 21st with a time of 21.41.

COLLEGE GOLF

Enoch drops match

ETSU rising senior Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) lost a close singles match on the final day of the Palmer Cup Saturday at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, falling to American Scott Langley 1-up. Enoch finished his Palmer Cup experience 1-3 over the three-day event.

VOLLEYBALL

King completes trip

The King College women’s volleyball team recently completed a two week mission trip to Brazil where outreach work, games against club teams and sightseeing occurred.

A group of 11 players went with head coach Chris Toomey, along with head athletic trainer Shelia Crockett and her husband Chris on the expedition in May.

While in Brazil, the squad worked in an orphanage, led an after school program in an underprivileged village, renovated a church nursery and performed music, dramas and puppet shows in five churches.
