Rasnick takes helm of VHS boys basketball team

Wayne Rasnick is the new boys basketball coach at Virginia High School.

According to VHS athletic director Barry Reed, Rasnick was approved for the position Thursday afternoon.

Rasnick led Castlewood to two straight regional titles along with a pair of appearances in the Virginia High School League tournament during his two-year stint with the Blue Devils.

Castlewood won its first Region D championship two years ago when the Blue Devils competed in Division 2. Castlewood was dropped to Division 1 status this past season, and rolled to the state tournament with four returning starters.

Wayne has been a very successful coach, and we’re excited to have him become a member of the Bearcat family,” Reed said.

Former Virginia High standout athlete Jason Stevens coached the Bearcats the past two years. However, Stevens is not employed as a teacher.

“We always try our best to fill our coaching positions with teachers or with a school employee,” Reed said. “Jason did a great job two years ago, and he did as good of a job as he possibly could this past season.”

VHS posted a 7-16 record this past season with a young lineup. Stevens led the Bearcats (19-9) to the Division 2 quarterfinals in his first season.

After a series of meetings and prolonged debates between school officials, Reed said he was relieved to finally have a new coach in place.

“We’re ready to pick up and move on, but unfortunately a lot of the basketball camps have already taken place,” Reed said.

Reed hopes Rasnick can build off his successful resume at the Bearcat Den.

“Really, what we’re looking for is stability,” Reed said. “That’s why we’re hoping Coach Rasnick will be a Bearcat for a long time.”

Earlier this spring, Tim Shoals was selected to replace Mike Posey as the boys basketball coach at John Battle.
