Tri-Cities PGA Junior series wraps up with championship

The Tri-Cities PGA Junior Series wrapped up the season today with the Championship at The Virginian. 

Seventy-Five of the top players from the regions 239 juniors that compete in summer tournaments challenged each other and The Virginian Golf Club.  There was five playoffs between the eight divisions.  

In the Boys 16-18 Division from 6900 yards, Matt Bowers (Kingsport) won in his final year of eligibility by shooting 74 and winning by 2 over Conner Hayden (Chilhowie, VA) and Nathan Ballenberger (Cedar Bluff, VA). 

Matt is headed to play for Lincoln-Memorial University this fall.  Zach Botts (Jonesborough) shot a 71 but signed for a 70 and was disqualified.   In the Boys 14-15 Division, Cameron Dugger (Hampton) birdied #18 for a one shot victory of Taylor Hall (Bristol) after shooting 75. 

Tying for third was Evan Crigger and Drew Doran with matching 78's.  

In the Boys 12-13 Division, there was a 4-way playoff between Nic Vandeventer (Bristol), Tanner Hall (Kingsport), James Beckner (Kingsport) and William Nottingham (Kingsport).  Eddie Karst (Kingsport) had the lead going into the last few holes but a bad hole on #18 caused him to miss the playoff. 

On the first playoff hole, Nic sunk a 30 footer for birdie and then Tanner sunk a 25 footer for birdie to match him and knock William and James out of the playoff with their pars.  Nic and Tanner went to the 2nd playoff hole and both made bogies after their tee shots missed the green. 

On the par 5 3rd hole, Nic was on in 3 and only 6 feet short of the hole.  Tanner put his third shot in the bunker and couldn't match Nic's easy par.  

In the Girls 15-18 Division, Allison Woodward (Unicoi) and Lacie York (Kingsport) shot matching 74s and ended up playing two playoff holes. 

Lacie missed the green on Hole 2 and Allison left her tee shot just a few feet short of the flag and made par to win the playoff.  In third place was Madison Alexander (Jonesborough) with a 75.  Eliza Chang (Johnson City) shot her best round with a 79.

In the Boys 10-11 Division, Seth Crawford (Kingsport) defended his title by shooting 40 on 9 holes.  Will Botts (Jonesborough) brought home second place with a 42.  

The Girls 12-14 Division saw Caroline Rhea (Jonesborough) win by 4 strokes over Lauren Hines (Kingsport) and Haverly Harrold (Kingsport) who went to a playoff to determine second place.  Haverly won the playoff on the first playoff hole.  

The Boys 8-9 Division was settled by a 2 hole playoff as Brogan Beckner (Kingsport) birdied the second playoff hole to claim the title over Hendrix Price (Johnson City).  

In the Girls 8-11 Division, Kaitlyn Grills (Kingsport) ran away with it after shooting 37.  She had a 9 stroke win over Jenny Simonsen (Johnson City).  

All of the Champions receive an exemption into next years Championship.
