LOCALS IN COLLEGE: Malone Earns Preseason Honor for Georgia State

The college baseball season hasn’t started yet, but Georgia State University pitcher Justin Malone has already racked up an honor.

The college baseball season hasn’t started yet, but Georgia State University pitcher Justin Malone has already racked up an honor.
The former Abingdon High School standout was an honorable mention selection on the Colonial Athletic Association’s preseason team.
Malone settled into the role of closer last year for GSU and helped the team qualify for the NCAA tournament. He went 1-0 with seven saves and a 1.35 ERA in 18 relief outings and also hit .217 with seven RBIs.
Georgia State opens the season on Feb. 19 at Florida State.

Career-high for Cook
Sophomore Ethan Cook had a productive night for The Crown College (Knoxville, Tenn.) on Jan. 19.
The Tennessee High graduate scored a career-high 22 points in a 96-84 men’s basketball victory over Johnson Bible College.

Word on Wilder
Cole Wilder (George Wythe) has played in nine games for the Radford University men’s basketball team this season, scoring nine points and grabbing three rebounds in his time on the court.

Local Coach
Virginia High graduate LaVonda Wagner has guided the Oregon State University women’s basketball team to a 9-8 record in her fifth season as a head coach.
OSU suffered a 79-75 double overtime loss to California on Saturday and fell to 1-6 in the Pacific-10 Conference.

Local Coach, Part II
The Louisiana-Monroe men’s basketball team is currently 9-12 under head coach Orlando Early, a former standout player at Lebanon High School.
Early guided his team to a victory over New Orleans on Saturday as ULM improved to 4-6 in the Sun Belt Conference.

Buckhannon in starting lineup
Ashley Buckhannon’s role has expanded significantly for the Radford University women’s basketball team recently.
After winning Big South Conference freshman of the week honors earlier this month, the former George Wythe High School star has started the last three games for the Highlanders. Buckhannon is averaging 5.9 points per game this season for RU.

First-place finish for Lovett
Former Abingdon High School swimming star Jared Lovett posted a win for Yale University in a dual meet loss to Navy on Saturday.
Lovett, a freshman, won the men’s 200 individual medley in 1:57.11. He added fifth-place finishes in the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke.

Zaldana runs to win
Milligan College’s Lili Zaldana (Tennessee High) won the women’s 3,000-meter race at the Appalachian State University indoor track meet on Jan. 15 in Boone, N.C. Zaldana finished in 10 minutes, 46 seconds.

Good showing for Stallard
Virginia High graduate Tonya Stallard placed fourth in the women’s shot put on Jan. 17 at the College Invitational at the Armory indoor meet in New York. Stallard had a throw of 35 feet, 10 inches.
