Like most freshmen, it took Radford University’s Ashley Buckhannon a little while to get adapted to the college game.
She appears to have the hang of it now.
The former George Wythe High School star was recently named the Big South Conference women’s basketball freshman of the week after an impressive three-game stretch.
She scored 16 points and hauled down five rebounds against Hampton on Dec. 23 and followed that up with a 15-point outburst against Marshall on Dec. 31.
Then on Jan. 4, she scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half to key RU’s 68-53 Big South Conference victory over Gardner-Webb.
Buckhannon is averaging 6 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists this season.

Perdue leaves IUP
Former Abingdon High School star Jill Perdue is no longer with the women’s basketball program at Indiana (Pa.) University.
Perdue appeared in eight games for IUP and averaged 7.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest for the NCAA Division II school. The highlight of her time with the team came in early-December, when she was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference freshman of the week.
Webb earns start
Twin Springs High School graduate Tyler Webb made his first start of the season on Jan. 6 for the Appalachian State University men’s basketball team.
The senior post player had five points and one rebound in the Mountaineers’ 62-58 loss to The Citadel.
Webb is averaging 2.3 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest for ASU.
Ex-Panther is productive
Former Twin Valley High School standout Logan Shortridge has appeared in eight games, making five starts, for the Bluefield State (W.Va.) men’s basketball team.
Shortridge is averaging 5.9 points and 1.9 rebounds per game.
Lovett makes splash
Yale University freshman Jared Lovett (Abingdon) finished third in the men’s 200 backstroke during a dual swim meet loss to Cornell on Sunday.
Lovett finished the race in 1:56.84.
Stallard is stellar
Virginia High graduate Tonya Stallard continues to shine on the track for the U.S. Military Academy.
Stallard placed fourth in the women’s heptathlon on Jan. 9 at the Carleton Crowell Open indoor meet in West Point, N.Y. Stallard compiled 2,828 points during the grueling event and was first in the shot put.
