A 23-point swing in the first half helped King College to a 113-108 win at Emory & Henry (Va.) College Monday even though an Emory & Henry player knock down 11 three pointers.

With the win, King improved to 6-3 on the season while Emory & Henry went to 2-10.

Seven minutes into the game, Emory & Henry built a 22-13 advantage thanks to five 3-pointers as Josh Rigney had three of the buckets. He went onto score 33 points in the game as he was 11-for-16 behind the arc. The 11 threes ties the school record.

To answer, Stephen Kite (Atlanta, Ga.) tied his season high with 23 points as five Tornado players reached double-digits.

King used a seven-point spurt capped by a Brent Thomas (Elizabethton, Tenn.) bucket with 11:52 left in the half to make the score 22-20. Eventually Craig McCargo (South Boston, Va.) tied the game at 27 apiece with a three pointer with 9:49 showing on the clock. The Tornado built an 11-point lead, 45-34, over the next five minutes. The margin swelled up to 14 points, 53-39, as Elisha Murray (Ft. Myers, Fla.) capitalized on a Wasps turnover for the layup.

Jordan Short hit Emory & Henry’s 11th three pointer of the first half, but King answered with Brian Hewitt (Lexington, Ky.) drained a three pointer from half court as the half ended to make the score 62-48 after 20 minutes.

Kite scored eight points in the first 3:45 of the second half as the Tornado stormed out to a 10-2 run for a 72-51 lead.

Emory & Henry made it an 11-point game, 79-68, with 12 minutes left. J.D. Dyson made the three pointer which pulled the Wasps closer.

Kite’s three pointer with five minutes left pushed King to the 100-point mark. At the time the Tornado led 100-86. It was the second time this season King had reached 100 points this season, the other at Carson-Newman (Tenn.) College on Dec. 12.

Short’s lay up with 3:27 left cut King’s lead down to single digits, 101-93. He added a free throw to complete the three-point play. Four more free throws helped the Wasps climb to within five, 102-97, with 2:16 left.
Murray had 18 points while Clarence Smith (Nashville, Tenn.) chipped in 16. Smith also had nine rebounds, a game high. Mark Dockery (Nickelsville, Va.) and McCargo scored 11 apiece.

King recorded a season high in the assist category with 21 as the team was 39-for-76 (51.3 percent) from the field. Emory & Henry used 21 three pointers en route to a 32-for-66 (48.5 percent) performance. King went 26-for-42 (61.9 percent) from the free throw line and the Wasps were 23-for-27 (85.2 percent).

Short finished with 26 points, Terrance Grigg poured in 18 and Dyson had 11.

The Tornado collected 44 rebounds while the Wasps had 36. King evened things with 21 assists and 21 turnovers. Thanks to 31 Wasps turnovers, King capitalized for 36 points.

King hosts Cincinnati Christian (Ohio) College for a 7 p.m. contest inside the Student Center Wednesday. The game will also be Student Night as the Tornado will give free admission to boys and girls elementary, middle and high school basketball players.
