LOCALS IN COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Bowers has big weekend for Walters State

Logan Bowers had a big opening weekend at the plate for the Walters State (Tenn.) Community College baseball team.

In a 9-7 loss to Wallace-Dothan (Ala.) on Saturday, Bowers went 1-for-2 and scored two runs.

On Sunday, the former Sullivan East High School standout went 2-for-3 and scored a run to key Walters State’s 12-10 victory over Middle Georgia.

Bowers started in center field in both contests.

Young sinks three
Former Tennessee High star Corey Young connected on his only shot attempt – a 3-pointer with 1:34 remaining in the first half – for the Lees-McRae (N.C.) men’s basketball team on Feb. 3 in a 62-59 loss to Limestone.
Lees-McRae has struggled to a 2-17 record under the direction of head coach Scott Polsgrove, who formerly led the basketball program at King College.

Former Panther’s production
Logan Shortridge (Twin Valley) had three points, two rebounds and two assists on Saturday for Bluefield State in an 89-46 loss to Pitt.-Johnstown.
Shortridge is averaging 3.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game this season.

Samuels soars for High Point
George Wythe High School graduate Ashlee Samuels has started 20 of the High Point University women’s basketball team’s 22 games and leads the Panthers in rebounding.
She is pulling down seven boards a game and has also blocked 20 shots. She’s averaging 6.1 points per game

Buckhannon vs. Big South’s Best
Radford University freshman guard Ashley Buckhannon (George Wythe) played well in a 63-45 loss to Big South Conference women’s basketball power Liberty on Feb. 1.
Buckhannon had nine points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals in a losing effort. Her steal and layup with 4:51 remaining in the first half got Radford within 19-13, but the Highlanders got no closer the rest of the way.

Lovett wins again
Former Abingdon High School star Jared Lovett posted another win for the Yale University swim team on Saturday in a 174-126 dual meet win over Connecticut.
He won the men’s 200 yard individual medley and placed second in the 200 butterfly.

Spring starts for Talley
Tusculum College freshman golfer David Talley (Virginia High) opened the spring season last week at the Outback Steakhouse Intercollegiate at the Hombre Golf Club in Panama City, Fla.
Talley tied for 59th in the event, shooting a 90 on the opening day and a 77 on day two for a two-round total of 167.
