BIRCHLEAF, Va. – For Haysi it was all about execution.
The Tigers executed on offense when it mattered most and knocked Hurley out of sole possession of first place in the Black Diamond District with a 57-38 win over the Rebels Saturday at Sandlick Elementary School.

The win leaves Haysi (9-9, 4-2) a half-game in front of Hurley (8-8, 3-2) in a tight BDD race. The Rebels and Tigers are even in the loss column, with Honaker one loss behind them and Council and Twin Valley another game back.

Chris Fleming scored 19 points and Byron Bowman added 18 for Haysi, which never trailed, but led just 39-34 after three quarters of play. Fleming scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 10-point lead and Hurley got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.

“It seemed like when we ran something it worked,” Haysi coach David Robinette said. “We probably didn’t run more than eight or 10 plays, but we executed what we called.”

Tyler Cooper scored 14 points, Dustin Waynick contributed a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points and Austin Cooper scored nine points to go with five assists for Hurley.
Bowman scored nine points as Haysi started the game on a 14-4 run. Hurley, behind 13 first-half points from Tyler Cooper, and 10 points in the third period from Waynick and Austin Cooper stayed within striking distance. Then came the final period, when the Rebels scored just four points.

“In the fourth quarter, for the first time in a long time, we got that deer-in-the-headlights look,” Hurley coach Mark Cooper said. “We just didn’t come ready to play.
“We looked tired on defense, and we should have been the ones with fresh legs. And we’d been playing pretty good defense the last three or four games.”

The loss ended Hurley’s four-game winning streak. The win helped Haysi put Friday’s BDD loss to Council behind it.

“Hurley was a tough matchup,” Robinette said. “But in the first quarter [Friday] we played no defense at all against Council, and the kids were determined to come out and play some defense tonight.”

The Tigers forced 10 turnovers in the first half to build a 28-22 lead at the intermission. Haysi held Hurley to a single field goal in 10 attempts to pull away in the fourth period.
Fleming and Waynick each blocked three shots. Dakota Stanley dished out five assists for Haysi.

GIRLS
Hurley 60, Haysi 52

Hurley’s girls earned their first BDD win in five years in Saturday’s opener, and knocked Haysi (10-7, 4-2) out of sole possession of first place in the process.

Chelsea Hunt scored all 12 of her points and Kendra Endicott added 11 of her 13 in the first half, when the Rebels held Haysi to 14.3 percent (4-of-28) shooting in building a 41-20 halftime lead.

Hurley overcame foul trouble and 25 turnovers by dominating the boards, 47-31, and held on to their big lead by hitting just enough free throws in the fourth quarter. Hunt, Endicott and Ashley Daugherty, who posted a double-double with 14 rebounds and 13 points, all fouled out in the final period.

Amanda Broyles scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half for Hurley (3-14, 1-4). Broyles and Cassandra Ashby each hit two free throws in the final 56 seconds.

“We played like I envisioned us playing all year,” Hurley coach Harold Horne said. “Sooner or later I knew we would, because these girls have the talent. It was just a matter of them going out and showing it.
“The girls off the bench went in and played well, and every kid contributed, whether it was ballhandling, or hustling on defense, or hitting a big foul shot, and that makes [the win] even better.”

Holly Bowman was a perfect 11-of-11 at the free throw line and scored a game-high 29 points for Haysi. Traci Edwards added 12 points. Her free throw with 1:17 remaining got the Tigers within 56-52.
